Pixelmator Pro 3.5.2 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.2 adds support for two new file formats — Adobe Illustrator (.AI) and Illustrator EPS — and introduces a Holiday templates collection with all-new holiday templates. The update also brings performance improvements, making switching between tools or opening documents faster and smoother.

Support for AI and Illustrator EPS Files

With support for AI file format, you can now open documents created using Adobe Illustrator and other compatible apps.

Open AI documents with original layers, shapes, text, and layer groups.

Thanks to full metadata support, AI documents keep their original layer names, color tags, and hidden layers which are often lost in other apps that open only embedded PDF previews in AI files. And, you can even open AI documents saved without PDF previews.

Support for Illustrator EPS also lets you open designs in this another very popular Adobe Illustrator file format, that's no longer natively supported on macOS 14.

Batch‑convert AI and Illustrator EPS to other file formats with support for the Convert Image action in Shortcuts.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.4 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.4 improves the handling of HDR images, including fixes for HDR content loading, applying color adjustments, working in Shortcuts, and adds a few other fixes.

The Black & White color adjustment will now work even better with HDR images.

Improved the look of the HDR button in the toolbar to more clearly indicate when HDR is turned on and off.

Added a checkbox in Shortcuts to turn HDR on and off when converting images to Pixelmator Pro document format using the Convert Images/Video action.

When applying Auto Enhance to HDR images, it would sometimes make them too bright. Fixed.

Images opened from Shared Albums in the Photos library would appear black in Pixelmator Pro. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.5 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.5 fixes an issue with Pixelmator Pro actions in the Shortcuts app, improves RAW support, and includes a few other improvements and fixes.

PSD files opened in Pixelmator Pro will now keep their keyword metadata.

Certain Pixelmator Pro actions were not working correctly in the Shortcuts app. Fixed.

RAW layers in Pixelmator Pro documents created using older app versions would be too dark. Fixed.

RAW photos taken with Sony A7 Mark IV cameras would not have automatic lens correction applied. Fixed.

Some compressed Fujifilm RAF photos would be displayed darker than the uncompressed ones. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.6 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.6 improves support for Photoshop PDF, AI, and Illustrator EPS files, includes updates to better handle Pixelmator Classic files and older Pixelmator Pro documents, and adds HDR improvements.

From now on, when you open a Photoshop PDF file, you will be able to see all the layers that were used to create it.

PDFs can now be opened with annotations, such as text, shapes, or signatures added using Markup in Preview.

Added various improvements to better support AI and Illustrator EPS files.

Improved PSD file optimization for Final Cut Pro to support Gradient Fill and Color Fill effects layers.

Added a few more improvements to better support older Pixelmator Pro documents with RAW layers.

Exporting images to HDR JPEG format will now better preserve image colors.

In PDFs, Pixelmator Pro would not open text layers that have been created using Archicad. Fixed.

In Pixelmator Classic documents with layers that have strokes, the butt endcap style would always be used. Fixed.

When adjusting fonts, certain font attributes would not be available in the Typography settings. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.7 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.7 now offers full support for the new Photomator Files browser on Mac. This lets users share their photos to Pixelmator Pro for further editing using the "Edit with Pixelmator Pro" feature, and easily save them back to Photomator. The update also improves support for Adobe Illustrator files and brings faster performance for compositions with multiple adjustments layers on Mac devices with Apple silicon.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 Flare

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 brings improved support for vector PDFs — including those created using Apple apps like Safari, Keynote, or Pages — now letting you edit text elements as regular text layers. Text Editing in PDFs

You can now import and edit text elements in vector PDFs as regular text layers.

Replace, format, and style the imported text using your favorite Pixelmator Pro tools.

Thanks to the advanced recovery of embedded text data in PDFs, original text content, fonts, and text formatting are retained.

Even if the document contains fonts that are not installed on your Mac, you can still import them as editable text layers and replace missing fonts with other available ones.

Extended Support for Apple PDFs

Remove Color

Powered by a state-of-the-art Texture-Aware Algorithm, the Remove Color adjustment lets you remove solid colors or entire color ranges from images and videos with remarkable quality and ease.

Simply pick a color you want to remove using the color picker and watch it instantly disappear.

Adjust how much of the selected color is removed using Color Range, Luminance Range, and Intensity sliders.

When removing background color in videos, use the Remove Color adjustment together with the Replace Color adjustment to get ultra-high-quality results.

Texture-Aware Color Adjustments

Enjoy texture-aware Shadows, Highlights, Exposure, and Brightness adjustments and two new adjustments — Clarity and Texture — in the renewed Basic color adjustments group.

You can also save any new document to JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, and HEIC and preserve the edits.

Easily save images opened from Photos back to the Photos library with layers and edits by choosing File > Modify Original in Photos.

Continue editing the modified images in Photos using the Pixelmator Pro extension.

Find, manage, and delete sidecar files in the Manage Files menu.

Turn automatic document saving and macOS Versions on and off by selecting or deselecting Use Auto Save and Versions.

Pixelmator Pro 3.3.9

Pixelmator Pro 3.3.9 introduces significant improvements to the Denoise tool, which now lets users adjust the amount of noise they want to remove from their images. The update also brings support for compressed Fujifilm camera RAWs, including RAW photos from the brand-new X-S20 model.

Denoise Improvements

Enjoy an updated Denoise tool, bringing quality improvements for artifact-free noise removal.

Use the new Denoise Intensity slider to adjust the amount of noise in an image. Lower the intensity to preserve more details, or increase it to make the image smoother.

You can also adjust the intensity of noise reduction in an image by entering a specific value.

The Denoise action in AppleScript and Shortcuts now has the option for adjusting intensity.

RAW Support Improvements

You can now open and edit compressed RAWs from Fujifilm cameras, including the highly-requested X-T4, X-T5 models, and more.

Compressed and uncompressed RAWs from the brand-new Fujifilm X-S20 model are now also supported on macOS 13.

Thanks to the extended RAW support, thumbnails of compressed Fujifilm RAWs will now be visible when browsing photos in the Pixelmator Pro photo browser.

View the lens model, aperture, and other camera metadata of the compressed Fujifilm RAWs in the Pixelmator Pro Info pane, or right in the Color Adjustments pane when adjusting colors.

Open and edit compressed Fujifilm RAWs in Photos using the Pixelmator Pro extension.

Compressed Fujifilm RAWs are now also fully supported in Photomator, letting you work seamlessly in Photomator and Pixelmator Pro.

Pixelmator Pro will now show an alert when attempting to open RAW photos from unsupported camera models.

Other Improvements

The Crop tool has been improved with a much more precise Straighten slider that lets you straighten images in 0.01-degree increments.

Clicking the icons at each end of the Straighten slider will now rotate the image at a 0.1-degree angle, or 1-degree angle when Shift-clicking.

The Decontaminate Colors feature has been improved to better preserve details when decontaminating colors at object edges.

Redesigned Layers Sidebar

The Layers sidebar has been redesigned to make it much easier to work with layers.

Informative layer subtitles now show useful info about layers, depending on their type: sizes for image layers, text formatting for text layers, path info for shape layers, and more.

The design of the blending controls has been updated and they'll now appear at the top of the Layers sidebar by default.

Layers sidebar viewing options can now be customized, so you can change the size of thumbnails, the visibility of layer subtitles, and the position of the blending controls.

You can now quickly add an empty layer using the new Add Empty Layer button.

Layer masks will now appear as separate layers in the Layers sidebar.

Layer masks can now be unlinked from their parent layer – double-click the line connecting a layer mask to its layer to link or unlink it.

Color Adjustments and Effects Layers

Color adjustments and effects layers let you apply color adjustments or effects to all the layers below them in a composition.

These new layer types work just like other layers — they can be masked, hidden, rearranged, and more.

You can now easily apply selective edits by using colors adjustments and effects layers with masks.

Use the Shift-Command-A keyboard shortcut to add a colors adjustments layer and Shift-Command-F to add an effects layer.

Over 200 New Shapes

Over 200 new artist-designed shapes have been added to Pixelmator Pro.

Several new shape collections have been added and others have been rearranged, so there are now 10 collections: Basic, Activities, Food, Objects, Arches, Science, Animals, Plants, Organic, and Symbols.

All shapes are pixel-perfect – this means their vector points perfectly align with pixel boundaries, ensuring any icons you create won't have any unwanted blurring.

M1 Ultra

Thanks to support for the M1 Ultra chip, Pixelmator Pro flies when performing machine learning-based tasks on the latest Mac Studio devices.

Tasks like automatic background removal, super-resolution, and photo enhancement are up to 1.7 times faster on M1 Ultra compared to M1 Max.

Scrubby Zoom

The Scrubby Zoom mode makes it easier to zoom images when using a graphics tablet or mouse.

When using the Zoom tool, you can simply drag your image horizontally – like scrubbing video controls – to zoom in and out.

When using other tools, first press the Space key, then the Option key to temporarily activate the Zoom tool.

If you'd like to, you can change the scrubby zoom scroll direction from horizontal to vertical using the following Terminal command: defaults write com.pixelmatorteam.pixelmator.x enableVerticalScrubbyZoom -bool true

Other Improvements

You can now create masks by Command-dragging layers onto other layers.

The photo browser has been redesigned from the ground up, bringing much improved support for iCloud Photos, a smoother photo browsing experience, and more.

Opening photos stored in iCloud will now automatically download full-resolution versions of these photos.

In the new photo browser, you’ll now find the Recents, Favorites, Panoramas, Selfies, Screenshots, and most of the other standard Photos albums.

Any changes you make in the Photos app — for example, if you rearrange or rename your albums, add or remove photos — will now instantly appear in the photo browser.

Change the size of thumbnails in the photo browser using the Zoom buttons or the Command-Plus (+) and Command-Minus (-) keyboard shortcuts.

It is now possible to change the colors of shapes and Color Fill effect right in the Layers sidebar. To open the color picker, double-click the layer thumbnail.

You can now quickly convert color adjustments applied to a layer into a color adjustments layer. Do that by clicking the More button at the top of the Color Adjustments pane and choosing Convert to Color Adjustments Layer.

PSD files exported from Pixelmator Pro will now open with editable Levels, Curves, Channel Mixer, and Invert adjustment layers in Adobe Photoshop.

Improved SVG support with certain third-party apps.

Option-scrolling to zoom using MacBook Air trackpads would sometimes work incorrectly. Fixed.

Select Subject

The new Select Subject feature lets you automatically select the subject of any image – also with just a click.

Note that this feature works especially well on macOS 12 and devices powered by the M1 chip.

Select and Mask Tool

Thanks to the new Select and Mask tool, you can now make advanced selections of challenging image areas – like hair or fur – with ease.

In the Select and Mask tool, you'll find a redesigned Smart Refine feature that turns rough selections into accurate ones automatically.

When using the Select and Mask tool, you'll also find a Refine Edge Brush that intelligently makes accurate selections of edge areas.

To see your selection in more detail, you can try different selection overlays, like On Red, On White, or Black and White.

Once you've refined your selection, choose to ouput it to a selection, a mask, a new layer, or a new layer with a mask.

In addition to the Select and Mask tool for refining and creating selections, we've added a Refine Mask tool for refining and creating masks.

Find this tool in Format > Mask > Refine Mask or by Control-clicking masked layers in the Layers sidebar.

Decontaminate Colors

Use the Decontaminate Colors feature to remove any traces of the previous background from the edges of objects.

When removing backgrounds, colors are decontaminated automatically, but you'll also find this feature in Format > Image.

Other Improvements

The Pixelmator Pro actions in the Shortcuts app have been updated to be able to remove backgrounds and create subject masks from any image (not just portrait images).

The Remove Background, Select Subject, Smart Refine, and Decontaminate Colors features are now scriptable with AppleScript.

The Export dialog now features an option to export images at custom sizes and scale factors.

The last-used export location will now be remembered app-wide rather than for each document.

Pixelmator Pro 2.3.5 brings an updated design for the Export for Web tool, adds the ability to evenly space objects of different sizes, includes some improvements and fixes for Pixelmator Pro actions in Shortcuts, and features a range of additional improvements and fixes.

Refreshed Export for Web Tool

The design of the Export for Web tool has been refreshed to make it easier to use.

On Apple silicon-powered devices, the speed of advanced PNG compression has been greatly improved.

You can now choose to keep or remove transparency when exporting WebP images optimized for the web.

Distribute Spacing

The new Distribute Vertical Spacing and Distribute Horizontal Spacing features let you evenly space objects of different sizes.

Shortcuts Improvements and Fixes

Pixelmator Pro actions in the Shortcuts app were not working with a larger number of images – they should now be able to handle hundreds of images and work faster than before.

When using the Pixelmator Pro actions in Shortcuts to export images for the web, remove noise, match colors, or increase resolution, the Pixelmator Pro app would stop responding while these actions were being processed. Fixed.

Square images would not be resized with the Pixelmator Pro Resize Images action. Fixed.

Other Improvements and Fixes

The View and Window menus have been rearranged to make the View menu a little more compact, moving window-related options to the Window menu.

When exporting SVGs using the Export for Web tool, hidden layers will not be included in the final file.

Images will now be shared to photos in HEIC instead of PNG, as photographic images tend to be very large in size.

The Image Size keyboard shortcut was not working with Japanese keyboards. Fixed.

With certain effects on shapes in PSD files, they would be opened incorrectly. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 2.3.6

Pixelmator Pro 2.3.6 adds support for calculations in text fields, improves compatibility with third-party cloud storage providers, adds optimizations to reduce the sizes of PXD files, and more.

You can now type calculations (such as "2px + 2") right into the text fields in Pixelmator Pro.

Compatibility with certain third-party cloud storage providers has been improved.

The content of pixel layers will now often be preserved in its original encoding (JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, and so on), greatly reducing file sizes in many common situations.

Support for masks in projects exported in Motion format has been improved, adding the ability to extend the lifetime of object masks. This fix was added by our colleague in Kharkiv, who's been working with us for over a year now. Although he's on indefinite paid leave, he saw this bug was an easy fix and pushed it to our git repo. Almost immediately after, he had to run down to his local bomb shelter as the Russian army started shelling residential areas of his city.

It's now possible to open 10-bit per channel HEIC images.

The Pixelate effect will now be automatically applied from the top left corner of the image.

The default position for the Pattern Fill effect will now be from the top left corner of the pattern image rather than its center to make presets that use this effect function more reliably.

The decimal point can now be used as a decimal separator even in locales that use commas for decimals – if it's the only separator, points will be considered the decimal separator.

If you'd like to disable text field math, use the following Terminal flag: defaults write com.pixelmatorteam.pixelmator.x enableTextFieldMath -bool false

Fixed a few cases where text field and tooltip values would be displayed as -0 or -0.0.

Document opening progress would sometimes be displayed incorrectly. Fixed.

16-bit PSD images exported from Final Cut Pro could not be opened in Pixelmator Pro. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 2.3.7

Pixelmator Pro 2.3.7 adds a fix for an issue with layer masks and allows to save documents to package-based formats by default using a Terminal flag.

ML Crop and Redesigned Crop Tool

The Crop tool has been redesigned and now features an ML Crop button that provides suggestions for how you could crop your photos to make them more eye-catching.

The Crop tool will now be much faster with large documents that contain many layers.

New perspective correction sliders will let you adjust the perspective of images right in the Crop tool.

The Crop tool now features 7 photographic overlays, such as Rule of Thirds, Golden Ratio, and Golden Spiral.

Quick Fill

The Quick Fill feature adds a way to quickly fill images, shapes, and text layers with a color using the magic of drag and drop.

You can drag and drop from any color well in the app onto any layer in your image or even onto layers in the Layers sidebar.

In Format > Image, you'll find a new Fill with Color command that lets you fill layers with color.

The new color well in the Pixelmator Pro toolbar will now display both your foreground and background colors and let you switch between them.

Stroke with Brush and Redesigned Paint Tool

The Stroke with Brush feature lets you automatically draw brush strokes along any image layer, shape, or selection, using any brush in your collection.

You'll see a live preview of your brush stroke as you adjust its basic and advanced settings.

You can also simulate tablet pressure and set a maximum pressure location for your brush strokes.

The redesigned Paint tool features an all-new brush browser with the ability to search for brushes by name.

After changing the settings of a brush, you'll also be able to update the selected preset with just a click.

The Paint tool now includes a Smoothing feature that will automatically smooth your brush strokes as you paint.

Redesigned Type Tool

The Type tool has received a makeover and now includes a text size slider, buttons for changing text size in small increments, a text field, and text size presets, bringing a wide variety of ways to resize text.

The new Advanced Options action pop-up menu makes character spacing, baseline, baseline shift, and ligature options easier to reach.

The new Spacing section lets you adjust line height and the space before and after paragraphs.

The new Indents section gives you a way to adjust paragraph indents for the first line and the left and right sides.

Double-clicking the thumbnail of a text layer will now choose the Type tool.

Character spacing can now be set much more precisely, with the ability to enter decimal values.

Improvements and Fixes

The options for adjusting the color of the Pixelmator Pro window background have been updated, adding presets specifically designed for working with images of various colors.

To quickly change the color of the window background, you can now Control-click anywhere outside your image.

The color of the checkerboard will now adapt to dark and light appearances.

The pixel grid will now be displayed at lower zoom levels – 1600% instead of 3200%.

The Selective Color adjustment will now appear above the Color Balance adjustment.

In Format > Image, you'll find new commands for filling layers with color.

When deleting cropped areas, line shapes that are partially outside the canvas will no longer be deleted.

Pressing and holding the Option key while dropping layers into your compositions will now turn off automatic layer naming.

The Info bar and Export for Web tools will now use the "×" symbol instead of the letter "x" to show image dimensions.

Option-Command-clicking a layer thumbnail will now load a selection according to the grayscale values of an image. You'll also find this in the Edit menu when pressing and holding the Shift key.

After starting to paint a brush stroke, the shape and grain textures would be mixed up in certain cases. Fixed.

Sometimes, when using pressure-sensitive tools, the first brush stroke would be painted without taking pressure into account. Fixed.

The keyboard shortcuts for Fill with Foreground Color and Fill with Background color were mixed up. Fixed.

After changing certain options using buttons in the Arrange and Style tools, undo steps would not be registered. Fixed.

After selecting colors from swatches in the Touch Bar, undo steps would not be registered. Fixed.

The layout of the presets in the template chooser would be incorrect after copying certain layers to your clipboard. Fixed.

New PSD Engine

The PSD engine in Pixelmator Pro has been completely rewritten from the ground up, massively improving support for PSD files.

Shape layers in PSD files will now be opened as shape layers in Pixelmator Pro.

Many more advanced text features in PSD files are now supported in Pixelmator Pro, including symbol sizes and capitalization.

Layered TIFFs with embedded PSDs will now be opened with layers in Pixelmator Pro.

Very large PSD files (in PSB format) are now also supported.

Certain adjustment layers, such as Hue/Saturation, Exposure, and Channel Mixer will now be preserved when importing PSDs.

The rendering of effects has been significantly improved, too.

When exporting to PSD, you can now optimize for Apple pro apps like Final Cut Pro and Motion.

Other Improvements and Fixes

More properties of ABR brushes are now supported, bringing much improved ABR brush import, including support for 16-bit brushes.

Maximum brush size has been increased to 5000 pixels.

Fixes

When picking colors using the color pickers in the Replace Color and Monochrome adjustments, only areas inside the selected layer could be picked. Fixed.

When opening documents with a large number of effects, adjustments, or styles, the tool options pane could not be scrolled until an effect, adjustment, or style was added or removed. Fixed.

The anchor points and direction handles of shapes would sometimes move at different speeds than from vector paths themselves. Fixed.

When drawing line shapes with the Inside stroke style applied, these lines would be temporarily rendered incorrectly if they were horizontal or vertical. Fixed.

When drawing paths with the Pen tools, points would not correctly snap into place. Fixed.

When using Refine Selection and then adjusting selected areas using the Color Adjustments tool, the changes in the selected area would not be flattened correctly. Fixed.

The Fade effect now has a Fade Whites slider that lets you darken the brightest areas of an image.

The Move Back, Move Front slider in the Arrange tool has been replaced by Move to Back, Move to Front, Move Backward, and Move Forward buttons.

When viewing and changing the pixel size and position of layers using the Arrange and Transform tools, you'll now be able to see decimal values when layers don't exactly align to pixels.

When viewing and changing the angle of layers using the Arrange and Transform tools, you'll now be able to see values up to two decimal places.

The blending mode pop-up menu in the Layers sidebar will now always be opened upwards, so you don't have to expand it by scrolling each time.

The names of the two Quick Look extensions have been updated to Thumbnails and Full-Size Previews to make it more obvious what each one does.

You can now create new documents from the clipboard when the clipboard contains a page from a PDF file.

The performance of the Slice tool on macOS 11 has been improved.

It was not possible to open non-RGB 32-bit images in Pixelmator Pro. They will now be opened as 16-bit RGB images.

Fixes

Drawing outside the canvas using the Repair tool would cause an area to not be repaired. Fixed.

When editing text in sheets, certain keyboard shortcuts that can be used to both edit text and edit layers will be disabled so only the text is edited.

RAW images with non-standard bias values (used to decode the RAW and apply initial exposure adjustments) would be opened incorrectly. Fixed.

Leaving the Crop tool active for a longer period of time without making any edits would automatically crop the image with the active settings after some time. Fixed.

EXR (and other images) with extended range color information would not be opened. Fixed.

Alignment guides were not working correctly. Fixed.

Improvements and Fixes

The Repair and Clone tools now work nondestructively with RAW layers, preserving all their extended dynamic range data.

You can now reset all changes made to RAW layers with the Transform, Repair, and Clone tools using the new Reprocess RAW command, which you can find by Control-clicking a layer in the Layers sidebar.

In that same shortcut menu, you’ll also find a new Export RAW command which lets you export the original RAW file directly from Pixelmator Pro.

The performance of the Repair tool has been improved — starting a Repair tool brushstroke should now be much faster and the tool should also be more responsive in large images.

The Paint tools will now start painting more quickly and responsively while the image is being scrolled, zoomed, or otherwise animated.

When using the Repair tool with Sidecar and Apple Pencil, it should now be a little less sensitive to pressure changes to make it easier to paint strokes with more consistent sizes.

The Repair tool overlay would sometimes not be visible when layers were behind certain other layers. Fixed.

The scrollbars would not work correctly when drawing shapes with the Pen tool. Fixed.

In certain cases, it was not possible to edit the text inside path text layers. Fixed.

Text would sometimes shift slightly when starting to transform path text or edit its path. Fixed.

The two-finger canvas rotation gesture can now be disabled using the following Terminal command:

Type on a Path

Easily type text on a path, a circle, or any other shape.

Use the new Shift-T keyboard shortcut to cycle through Type tools.

Text layers typed on paths can be easily converted into shapes.

Canvas Rotation

Use the new canvas rotation feature to freely rotate your canvas to any angle.

You can rotate the canvas using the rotate Multi-Touch gesture.

Canvas rotation snaps to 90° angles with haptic feedback.

Enter specific angles to set an exact rotation.

Press and hold the Space bar and R key together, then drag to quickly rotate the canvas when using any tool.

You can also choose to always show or hide canvas rotation controls in the View menu.

Welcome Screen

A friendly new welcome screen makes it easier to open your existing images, create new ones, and open photos from your Photos library.

The Welcome screen appears automatically when you open Pixelmator Pro, but you can also open it from the Window menu or using the Shift-Command-1 keyboard shortcut.

Preview files in the new Welcome screen using Quick Look by pressing the Space bar on your keyboard.

Improvements and Fixes

Version 3 of the ML Super Resolution algorithm brings support for upscaling RAW files, a progress bar, and even sharper results.

The performance of the Clone tool has been improved.

Converting a masked layer that has been transformed using the Transform tool into pixels would not work correctly. Fixed.

Transforming group layers containing layers that have been recently masked would not work correctly. Fixed.

On macOS 10.14 or later, memory usage would occasionally spike when working on large documents. Fixed.

Text glyph variants were not working. Fixed.

If a text layer is hidden or locked while the text in it is being edited, text editing mode will now be exited automatically.

Automatically resizable path text layers on open paths would stop expanding once one edge of the path was reached. Now, the text box will also expand to the opposite edge.

After changing the size of an image, the zoom level will no longer be automatically adjusted to keep the image the same visible size on the screen.

The layer handles of locked path text layers were incorrect. Fixed.

If two text layers were overlapping and the lower layer was selected, clicking to select the upper layer would cause the text of the lower layer to start being edited. Now, the upper layer will be selected.

When using drag and drop to insert text or emoji into a path text layer and dropping it into empty areas at the beginning or the end of the path text box, it would be inserted incorrectly. Fixed.

Using the Option-scroll gesture to zoom would not always work when using a Magic Mouse. Fixed.

In certain cases, undoing changes made using Trim Canvas would cause parts of the image to disappear. Fixed.

In rare cases, creating a path text layer would cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

With any shape tool selected, shapes will now always be drawn immediately, even on top of other existing shapes to make it easier to create illustrations.

See your most recently used fonts at the top of the font pop-up menu.

To temporarily select or move shapes while using any shape tool, you can now press and hold the Command key.

If you Control-click the points of a shape, you’ll now be able to divide and join individual paths.

When using the Arrange tool or one of the shape tools and having a shape layer selected, pressing the Enter key will start editing the shape.

When opening large Pixelmator Pro documents, a thumbnail of the image will now be displayed in the progress dialog.

ML Denoise and ML Super Resolution will now use up to 10 times less memory.

Locked layers will no longer be automatically selected on the canvas.

Stroke performance has been significantly improved and layer strokes are now at least 10x faster.

Text layers can now have Inside and Outside strokes along with the current Center stroke.

The new Replace Image feature adds a way to replace image layers while preserving all their layer styles, color adjustments, effects, and other nondestructive features.

Quickly activate Replace Image using the Shift-Command-R keyboard shortcut.

You can now create a mask from an image using the Choose Mask command in the Format menu.

Format > Invert Colors will now invert the colors of image layers and masks without applying the nondestructive Invert adjustment.

The Command-I keyboard shortcut has been reassigned from the Invert adjustment to the new Invert command.

The Shift-Command-V keyboard shortcut will now insert a new layer from the Finder.

The Option-Command-G keyboard shortcut will now create and release clipping masks.

The Option-Command-comma (,) keyboard shortcut will now toggle layer visibility.

Option-clicking Add Mask in the Layers sidebar shortcut menu will now add a mask that reveals all the contents of the masked layer instead of hiding everything.

If you Option-click Add Mask with an active selection, the selected area will be hidden by the mask rather than everything outside the mask.

Scroll bars will now always be visible when “Show scroll bars” is set to Always in System Preferences.

The Motion blur effect will now use degrees (from 180º to -180º) as the unit instead of a percentage based on radians.

The largest icons were missing from the Pixelmator Pro app icon set. Fixed.

Certain layers would not appear after hiding and showing their parent group layers. Fixed.

Opening very large documents would occasionally cause Pixelmator Pro to stop responding. Fixed.

Control-clicking the layer mask in the Layers sidebar would not make the shortcut menu appear. Fixed.

Rotating certain low-resolution images by 90 degrees would introduce blurring. Fixed.

Drag and dropping images was not working correctly on Mac computers with Intel Iris graphics processors running macOS 10.15. Fixed.

Improvements

Zooming and scrolling are now at least 10 times faster thanks to asynchronous rendering. Plus, it's always responsive, even if the image preview isn't quite yet ready.

Zooming is even faster in any Mac with multiple GPUs as any integrated, discrete, and external GPUs will be used to speed it up.

Effects will now be applied and rendered up to 3 times faster.

All painting tools (including brush-based retouching tools) are now up to 2 times faster.

The Color Adjustments, Effects, and Zoom tools now have shortcut menus on the canvas to adjust image zoom and customize viewing.

For any images without a color profile, the Info bar will now show No Color Profile instead of Device RGB.

The standard sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile will now be shortened to sRGB in the Info bar.

In the Color Profile pop-up menu, None has been moved to the bottom of the list and any custom color spaces will be shown at the top.

The Select Color Range tool now makes better selections of dark regions.

The Free mode in the Free Transform Mode has been renamed to Resize (because that's what it actually does).

An alert will now appear when documents cannot be saved due to insufficient permissions.

An updated version of the Gilbert Color font adds Katakana characters.

Text in SVG files was being displayed incorrectly. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5.2

There’s a new color adjustment: it’s called Vignette and it works like the one in Photomator, helping you add artistic vignettes to your photos.

If a photo has been cropped nondestructively, the new Vignette will be applied to the cropped image.

Performance in compositions with a large number of layers has been improved again, this time layer moving and editing is up to 10x faster in some cases.

After reordering, merging, or converting layers and undoing/redoing changes, the selected/unselected state of layers will now be correctly restored. Even though this is more of a bug fix, it’s a very nice one, so we’ll call it an improvement!

The last used soft proofing profile will be remembered across different documents, so you can now preview a new document with the last used profile by simply pressing the Command-Y keyboard shortcut.

The Clone tool has been improved with: Smaller brush spacing for a much smoother cloning experience. A default Softness setting of 50%.

When cropping, you can now move the crop area using the arrow keys.

The quality and performance of the Freeform Pen tool have been much improved – fewer vector points will be added to the lines you draw to reflect how vector paths are usually drawn manually.

When drawing a path with the regular Pen tool, you can now split the direction line of your current anchor point as you add it by pressing and holding the Option key.

In the middle of drawing a path with the Pen tool, you can now also edit any visible direction lines by Command-dragging to move them, or Option-dragging to split the two sides of a direction line and move each individually. Once you’ve split a direction line, you can rejoin it by Option-dragging it, or move each side separately using the Command key.

The Replace Color adjustment is now better at replacing black, white, and shades of grey.

When adjusting gradient fills added with the Style tool, you can now move the position of the gradient by dragging the gradient direction line on the canvas.

Undoing changes made with the Repair tool will now be faster.

When using the Free Transform tool and moving an object using the arrow keys, it’s position values in the Tool Options pane would not update. Fixed.

Using the color picker to change the color of partially selected text in a text layer would not work. Fixed.

When using the Styles, Effects, or Color Adjustments tools and picking colors with the color picker in the Colors window, undo steps would not be registered. Fixed.

Type tool presets were not being displayed correctly on macOS 10.13. Fixed.

When adding effects from the Generator group, layer thumbnails would not be displayed correctly. Fixed.

The Smart Erase tool was not erasing in all areas of an image. Fixed.

The appearance of the buttons the Trim Canvas dialog would be incorrect while the dialog was sliding in to appear. Fixed.

The Sharpen tool was not working correctly at all Zoom levels. Fixed.

Clicking to add a line shape would place its endpoints between pixels by default. Fixed.

Auto Save performance has been significantly improved.

The new Show Source Marker option for the Clone tool lets you show and hide the occasionally inconvenient source marker.

It was not possible to undo text color changes after selecting text in a text box and using the sliders in the Colors window to change its color with a Force Touch trackpad. Fixed.

When using Export for Web to export images at 2x and 3x scale factors, shape layers would not be exported correctly. Fixed.

When using Pixelmator Pro on Mac computers with AMD Navi GPUs — either external ones or internal ones, such as in the new 16-inch MacBook Pro — images would not be rendered correctly. Fixed.

When applying certain effects to layer masks, Pixelmator Pro would sometimes stop responding. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5.4

The new ML Super Resolution feature lets you increase the resolution of images without blurriness or reduced quality using state-of-the-art machine learning.

You can find ML Super Resolution in the Image menu, as an algorithm in Image Size, and as an algorithm in the Transform tool.

ML Denoise has been significantly improved, bringing between 2 to 4 times more accurate noise analysis and removal.

The Image Size and Color Depth dialogs now have help buttons, leading you to the relevant help pages.

Changing the Resolution value in the Image Size dialog will now change the pixel size of an image under all circumstances, rather than only with print units selected.

Using the painting and retouching tools as a scrolling action was ending would not be possible, now these tools will start working as soon as scrolling stops, no matter when the painting action was started.

The Style tool’s Show Original button was not working correctly. Fixed.

Duplicating a selected part of a layer with nondestructive effects applied to it would cause Pixelmator Pro to stop responding. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5.5

After changing the size of an image (or using ML Super Resolution), the visible part of the canvas will be preserved.

The maximum range of the Sharpen color adjustment has been extended to 100 pixels.

Because it was prone to causing confusion, resizing images using the Bilinear algorithm will be destructive, just like the other algorithms are.

For those of you who’d rather invert the Option-scrolling zoom direction, you can use the following Terminal command to do so: defaults write com.pixelmatorteam.pixelmator.x scrollToZoomDirectionInverted -bool true

The Quick Selection tool will now be selected as the default tool in the Quick Selection/Color Selection group for new users.

After upscaling images using ML Super Resolution, certain pixels would become very slightly transparent. Fixed.

Selecting part of an image, deleting the selected area, undoing the edits, and repeating the same steps again would result in the layer disappearing. Fixed.

After choosing Hide Tab Bar or Hide Interface, the layout of the document title would be incorrect. Fixed.

When using the shortcut menu in the Layers sidebar while the Pixelmator Pro window doesn’t have focus, certain commands would not work. Fixed.

Using File > New > Clipboard would sometimes result in Pixelmator Pro quitting unexpectedly. Fixed.

Attempting to export layers that have only numbers in their name using the Export for Web tool would cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

Sometimes, editing shape layers within groups would cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

Pixelmator Pro Extension Fixes

When opening photos using the extension, if the associated Pixelmator Pro file is in iCloud Drive, the extension will attempt to download it before opening.

If the extension cannot save to iCloud Drive, it will try to save to the Pictures folder instead. If that also fails, you will be offered to save the layered file to a custom location.

The layout of the reshaping tools in the Touch Bar was incorrect. Fixed.

The keyboard shortcuts for changing the visibility of the Tools sidebar, switching between the Thumbnails and List view in the Layers sidebar, and inverting selections were incorrect. Fixed.

Failing to open a photo using the extension would cause it to quit unexpectedly. Now, an alert will be shown and the preview of the photo will be opened instead.

It was previously possible to attempt open the Photos extension while it was still loading, which would cause it to quit unexpectedly. Fixed.

With layer filtering and search, finding just the layers you’re looking for is simpler than ever.

Filter layers according to layer type (images, text, shapes, and groups), color tags, or both.

Quickly adjust layer opacity and blending mode right in the Layers sidebar.

Use clipping masks to clip the contents of one layer to the outline of another — even layer groups or nested shapes!

Add clipping masks from the shortcut menu in the Layers sidebar, by Option-clicking between two layers, or from the Format menu.

Release a clipping mask by double-clicking the arrow in the Layers sidebar.

When using the painting, retouching, or reshaping tools on a layer with Color Adjustments, Effects, or Styles, all nondestructive filters will dynamically update to the layer’s new content and won’t be flattened. This one’s big!

The Color Balance adjustment has been redesigned and can now be edited using color wheels inspired by those used in the cinema industry to color grade films.

Along with adjusting the color tints of the shadows, midtones, and highlights, the new Color Balance now includes sliders for adjusting their brightness and saturation as well.

A Master wheel lets you adjust the Color Balance of an entire image at once.

Color Balance can also be improved automatically using the ML Fix feature, trained on millions of professional photos.

When using the Image Size command, you can now choose from three image resizing algorithms — Bilinear, Lanczos, and Nearest Neighbor.

When using Export for Web, adding a suffix, then changing the export format to SVG would export the SVG with a suffix, even though it shouldn’t have one. Fixed.

If part of a text layer was beyond the canvas, converting it into pixels would sometimes change its position. Fixed.

Improvements

The performance of the Quick Selection tool has been improved by 20%.

The cursor of the Paint, Erase, and Pixel Paint tools will now be displayed as a crosshair if it is smaller than 2 pt on the screen (based on your zoom level).

All fonts will now be displayed in the Type tool’s font pop-up menu instead of just the ones optimized for your current locale.

Guides can now be moved while using the Type and shape tools.

There is now a Guides submenu in the View menu with options to clear and lock persistent guides as well as customize alignment guides.

The range of the Spin, Box, Disc, and Motion blur effects has been extended — hold down the Option key and drag the Amount/Radius sliders to blur layers even more.

When applying effects, such as False Color, Clouds, and Checkerboard, which fill areas with color, you can now adjust the opacity of each color (in the Colors window).

The Invert color adjustment now inverts colors mathematically rather than perceptually, just like the Invert effect does.

When using the Crop tool, the cropping box will now be drawn over your entire image, not the area on which you are currently zoomed in.
