For the first time in a while, Apple has started selling a refurbished iPhone 8 model for $359 through its online store in the United States.

iPhone-8-Gray-Feature.jpg

For the time being, this is now the cheapest iPhone model that can be purchased directly from Apple, but the device is nearly four and a half years old and we strongly recommend considering the second-generation iPhone SE in this price range. Released in April 2020, the iPhone SE is available with 64GB of storage for $399 or 128GB for $449.

An even better option may be to wait for the third-generation iPhone SE, which is expected to launch around March or April with an A15 chip and 5G.

There are many downsides to the iPhone 8, including that the device will likely stop receiving iOS updates at least a few years before the second-generation iPhone SE due to its age. The second-generation iPhone SE also has a newer A13 chip, compared to the A11 chip in the iPhone 8, and has several features not available on the iPhone 8, including Portrait Mode photos, QuickTake video, Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit-class LTE, and eSIM/Dual SIM.

The refurbished iPhone 8 is available in space gray and is an unlocked device. All refurbished iPhones come with a new battery, a new outer shell, and a new white box. Included with the iPhone 8 is EarPods with a Lightning connector, a Lightning to USB-A cable, and a 5W power adapter. All refurbished iPhones are also covered by the same one-year warranty as a new iPhone, and AppleCare+ can be purchased for the device.

This is good. It might be indicative of them likely liquidating parts under the name of ‘premium’ 8 as against the SE that, thanks to forums, got an impression that it’s a low-rung thing, and why would they do this? Possibly to bring SE in the chassis of the mini in March-April?

I can hope, right?! ?

To me that makes perfect sense to keep the smaller chassis alive for people that love it.

But - the price they are charging? I don’t know who is going to pay that price. Apple being Apple.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the iPhone 8 has ever been offered in 128GB. Only 64 and 256.
Correct! Never been offered in 128GB. Only the refurbished models. Can’t believe this was almost 5 years ago.

It’s my opinion that the iPhone 8 Plus was AND STILL IS the “best iPhone ever made” when you take into account the horrible flickering that’s present on all OLED iPhones (no flickering on 8 Plus LCD).
The iPhone 8 Plus to this day still has the “best” display of any iPhone ever made, including the current ones.

iPhone 8 Plus price history:

Apple originally launched the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017 for $799 for 64GB and $949 for 256GB.

One year later, there was an iPhone 8 Plus price drop to $699 for 64GB and $849 for 256GB.

Then, alongside the launch of the iPhone 11, Apple officially retired the 256GB iPhone 8 Plus, introducing a new 128GB model instead. This was accompanied by an iPhone 8 Plus price drop to $549 for 64GB and $599 for 128GB. The iPhone 8 Plus was discontinued shortly after, coinciding with the release of the iPhone SE 2020in April 2020.

$349 for a refurbished iPhone 8 Plus is a super bargain- considering that you’re buying the best iPhone they make.

You can get an iPhone XS Max barely used even cheaper. Of course, you are getting this directly from Apple, so I understand the peace of mind they are pushing here with this.

The 128 GB iPhone 8 was added to the line-up (replacing the 256) with the introduction of the iPhone 11.

The 7+ was Apple's first-ever High-Perf iPhone !

It has a flawless & streamlined Performance Controller design, & 3 GB of DRAM !

But, 3 GB of DRAM now (with iOS) isn't what it used to be :( !

The 8+ was little-changed from the 7+, but did have a fancier Performance Controller design, which may OR may NOT still be suspect !

Regardless, the age of the device & the amount of DRAM makes it a Show Stopper !

The 128 GB iPhone 11, @ $549 USD, is a much better option !

If Apple offered a modern version of the 7+ today, it would be their single-most-popular iPhone !

TouchID is the single-best-feature Apple has ever removed from their iPhones !

The 128GB iPhone 8 was added in 2019.

Apple often tweaks the configuration by adding storage options or reducing colors once a device moves from new to mature to attract mainstream consumers. Another example is Jet Black iPhone 7 getting 32GB.

That is correct. I remember being ticked off when upgrading from 6s 128gb to the 8, I had to buy the 256gb version because 64 was not enough and 128 was just right for me (still is).

Edit: ah, i didn't realize the 128gb version was added later.

Plus the A11 chip in the iPhone 8 (and iPhone X) misses out on a load of iOS 15 features which require an A12.

I think this is a pretty bad deal. Vast majority of people would be much better off going for the SE.
Better off going with an even older iPhone?

iPhone SE has A9 while iPhone 8 has more powerful A11

Now, if you mean SE2 / 2020 SE, then I agree with you. They can be had for half of this refurb'd iPhone 8
