Apple launched a new web player for Apple Music today, allowing pretty much any PC, tablet or smartphone to access the music streaming service.
The Apple Music web app is still in beta but allows you to access all of your saved music, playlists and browse new music. Before the web app launched, the only way to access Apple Music on PC or Mac required using iTunes. Apple is moving away from iTunes with the launch of macOS Catalina by piecing out some of its duties to new apps.
Apple told Billboard that it eventually plans to let people sign up for Apple Music through the web app. The website currently forces you to go through iTunes to sign up for Apple Music.
There are a few features missing in the current web player. You can’t access Beats 1 or Apple Music friends yet. Those features will be added in a future update though.
Extending the Apple Music platform to the web gives Apple more room to compete with Spotify without having to build specific apps for Windows, Linux and other platforms. Apple Music does have an app for Android but it features usually lag behind the iOS version.
