Later today In a couple of days, if everything goes fine, and definitely by the end of this week, NoScript 10, the first “pure” WebExtension NoScript version, will be finally released for Firefox 57 and above, after years of work and months NoScript 5.x living as a hybrid one to allow for smooth user data migration.
NoScript 10 is very different from 5.x: some things are simpler, some things are improved, some are still missing and need to wait for WebExtensions APIs not available yet in Firefox 57. Anyway, whenever you decide to migrate, your old settings are kept safe, ready to be used as soon as the feature they apply to gets deployed.
If you’re not bothered by change, you’re ready to report bugs* and you’re not super-paranoid about the whole lot of “NoScript Security Suite” most arcane features, NoScript 10 is worth the migration: active content blocking (now more configurable than ever) and XSS protection (now with a huge performance boost) are already there. And yes, Firefox 57 is truly the most awesome browser around.
If, otherwise, you really need the full-rounded, solid, old NoScript experience you’re used to, and you can’t bear anything different, even if just for a few weeks, dont’ worry: NoScript 5.x is going to be maintained and to receive security updates until June 2018 at least, when the Tor Browser will switch to be based on Firefox 59 ESR and the “new” NoScript will be as powerful as the old one. Of course, in order to keep using NoScript 5.x outside the Tor Browser (which has it built-in), you have to stay on Firefox 52 ESR, Seamonkey, Palemoon or another pre-Quantum browser.
Or you can even install Firefox 58 Developer Edition, which allows you to keep NoScript 5 running on “Quantum” with the extensions.legacy.enabled trick. Just please don’t block your updates on Firefox 56, it would be bad for your security.
Let me repeat that: your safest option for the next few days is Firefox 52 ESR, which will receive security updates until June 2018.
So, for another half-year you there will be two NoScripts: just sort your priorities and choose yours.

thilo-wolf, there *is* an API to disable javascript per page. A script can flag a page as non-javascript, but set the iframes in it as javascript even. For some reason uMatrix is not using it and locked commenting in the bug. See bz’s comment in the uBlock bug.
So IMO this is entirely a uMatrix/uBlock problem, it just would be nice if the browser supported uBlock/uMatrix’s expected behaviour WRT CSPs…

Yikes! I just let Firefox upgrade to v57.0 only to discover NoScript no longer works! NoScript is the main reason I use Firefox in the first place!! I will happily download the new NoScript the instant it’s available and keep you posted about any issues i encounter as a fairly knowledgeable but "normal" (i.e., not an actual geek) user.

@Phillip, I’m going to bet the answer is "no" since while Mozilla is going out of its way to support Chrome’s APIs, they’ve also added a ton of their own – there’s an open NoScript bug in bugzilla on what new APIs giorgio needs. I subscribed a while ago to see how NoScript failed.

People are shitting their pants because NoScript 10 has not shown up on the AMO. You’re lagging behind the FF release schedule a little, but I guess you need all the time you need to make sure NS works before publishing.

Such as media, geo, observer, experiments, resource, safebrowsing, dom storage, fullscreen, gfx, eme, pdfjs, asmjs, webjs, livecam, webrtc, social and so on, above WebGL and Canvas?
Those are pretty much completely out-of-reach, due to the missing registry options, with the arrival of FF 57.
You might have a look at this prefbar plugin extension, to get some additional ideas, too.

I always like improvements but did not expect to have my work day interrupted by the new firefox. Was disappointed at first to have to use umatrix and I am very pleased to see noscript will have something soon. Nothing against umatrix but I find the interface of NoScript less obtrusive on my screen and easier to use. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
glad to hear about this, I already knew that there will be a WE update so I missed it not being here yet. Like Buck said, I’m temporally using uMatrix but, despite having more options, it’s too much restrictive when blocking things and don’t always show all blocked items (I had to temporary allow all to whitelist scripts).

I dropped Firefox 57 on the floor immediately like worthless rubbish and reinstalled Firefox 56.0.1. I’ll wait patiently for NoScript to be ready and then upgrade. Thank you for your efforts.
Not having this plugin feels like not having safe sex anymore
I will echo much of what has been said above. Most notably, my shock when I upgraded to FF 57 and discovered I had lost Noscript. (Not only this, but another important extension I depend upon.)
Embarrassingly, I attempted to follow some of the ‘workaround’ suggestions that have been offered here on the site today and only made things go from unhappy to miserable. Changes to about:config did nothing. Installing that development version of FF did nothing but make things worse. Attempting to uninstall and reinstall a different version failed miserably. (Okay, I’m not a power user.)
The old saying that ‘Patience is a virtue’ is one I should have adhered to. I will now do so, after managing to get my system back to workable (with a few headaches that persist)
I don’t blame Goirgio as I’m sure he’s doing his best. He even responded to an email immediately this morning. (that blew my away)

I feel naked without No Script! I am using Firefox Nightly. Today, NoScript 4.1.5rc1 broke today for visiting new websites which do not support https.
I won’t be updating to Firefox 57 until no-script is fully released. A big warm thank you to Giorgio for making such an amazing addon that I can’t live without. May all the quirks and bugs smooth out until release. Thanks again!

If you’re stuck with FF57, for whatever reason, you can always completely disable JavaScript in about:config until NoScript is ready for FF57.
Not ideal, but if you can live with the effects, it’s another option.
I downgraded to ESR as fast as I could when noticed NoScript is not available.

For their new "Quamtum" Browser Mozilla recommends a replacement for NoScript. If you don’t accept switching to another tool (as NoScript is proven and tested by more than 1 million users) you may simply download and install the previous Firefox version (56.0.2: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/releases/), then you’ll deactivate automatic updates, and you’ll just wait some days until NoScript is available for "Quantum". That’s what I have done. I will update to "Quantum" only if it runs with NoScript. Full stop.
The only one missing. For the rest I’ve found a replacement.
Couldn’t agree more with #38 Hubert Bartels and #43 Higher Power. Did just go back to FF 56.0.2 and was happy to find all of my profile settings still intact. Anyway, strongly advised: profile backups (simply copy / paste the profile folder onto another folder/usb drive) before thinking to change significant things such as migrating to FF 57

A little delay is okay in my book.
What’s most important is that you can provide a thorough and transparent list of NoScript 10’s limitations, even if they will only last a few months, as that will help people decide if they upgrade to Firefox 57 but also how they may alter the way they browse to compensate for limitations. (Maybe adding another add-on, or allowing JavaScript more sparingly, or making uBlockOrigin tougher in blocking content to reduce exposure, …)
That would help trusting the new NoScript, even once it will be fully featured again, since it’s a complete rewrite running in a less permissive environment.
Thanks for your work anyway, and congrats too because you not only rebuilt NS from scratch but also implemented a lot of required features into Firefox itself for NS and other add-ons to use.
You don’t know how many times noscript has saved me from $hitty websites, spam, malware, viruses, popups, etc. etc. I’m so stoked to know you’re close to releasing it for Quantum! Thank you! (I donate and everyone else should too)
I’m anxiously awaiting the release, for many reasons. That being said, I am NOT a fan of what the screenshots show: the options being controlled through a webpage instead of a standalone interface. I’m pissed. Mozilla updated to 57 with no warning that noscript would be disabled. Had I known, I would have waited until you guys were ready. Mozilla never allows you to go back to a previous version once you upgrade. How arrogant!
Even though Firefox 57 is supposed to be better/faster, browsing lots of tabs on it feels slow and bloated without NoScript. Now that AdBlockPlus works in Firefox 57, NoScript is all I need for the browser to be complete again. Keep up the great work.

I uninstalled FF 57.0 and reinstalled FF 56.0.2 with full NoScript 5.1.5.
I will wait for the new NoScript that works with FF Quantum before I "upgrade" to 57.0 again.
The main reason I use Mozilla’s Firefox browser is because of the NoScript extension.

I wish they would make a tool or a way to export your Noscript settings into a hosts file format.
Something like convert Block google.ads.com to
0.0.0.0 google.ads.com
Not just for this transition period but for functional compatibility with other browsers.
For example:
If it’s blocked in Firefox I export that to a compatible hosts file list and add it to my hosts file.
Now Chrome and Edgeless are blocked from going there too.
I use a custom hosts file already but it doesn’t catch 100% of everything like Noscript does.

Thank you so much for makin NoScript! It has become the absolute Must-Have Addon for Firefox and if the guys at Firefox would have more class, they’d hire you as an INTEGRAL part of Firefox. Because, without you, Firefox would be worth only 50%!!
Unlimited times NoScript has literally saved my ass, or I was able to circumvent the most-evil invasive-ADs. Sometimes, I had to play around with the settings of NoScript, like using an old machine, where you try to turn some switches ON and OFF. In the end, in 95% of most cases, I was able to get a relaxes internet-experience without evil mechanisms, which draw my attention away!!

I forgot how unpleasant the net is without your wonderful addon. Would it be safe to assume the delay is partly due to the new version of firefox being designed to make it harder for programs like yours to work? Seems as if FF has been getting more and more comfortable with surveilance.
Fast Eddy: the problem is that Mozilla (the team behind Firefox) has completely rewritten their interface. Pretty much nothing is the same; APIs have all changed, code has all changed. They estimate they have or will be replacing over 5 million lines of code with the Quantum project.
NoScript has to translate its current functionality to the new WebExtensions API, some of which is not even released under Firefox 57.

Impressive that you’re as close as you say for such a major update. I set Firefox as my default browser, even though I’m a chrome user, so that if I do something silly like click on a link I shouldn’t have, NoScript stops anything particularly bad from happening.
I must admit, I’ll have to make some time for Firefox Quantum to see what they’ve done for improvements… but I’m very much looking forward to getting NoScript back up and running. Thank you for all your hard work!

Visiting the web without NS is like if you would exit your house with no clothing and the temp outside is freezing cold, it would not be a delightful experience for long…
If you want NoScript 10 done, stop asking Giorgio questions and asking him to add new features.
He’s already BUSY, working on finishing NoScript 10 — questions and requests (if he even bothers to look at them) will only slow him down.
Let him do what he’s doing, and WAIT for him to finish. It’s as simple as that!

Won’t browse without NoScript. A little bit upsetting is the fact that mozzilla develops a complete new browser but accepts to be not complete but put it out. The webextension API is missing some low level calls , so NoScript cannot use all the functions it supported before. ;-) I hope they will soon provide the missing low level API !

Thank you for continuing the development of this addon, Giorgio. I have a question: Is there any advantage to running NoScript if I already have uMatrix configured to block all 3rd party domains by default? I’m thinking that the only advantage it would give is blocking the 1st party domain by default, which could easily be configured in uMatrix as well. It’s true that uMatrix requires a little more learning and configuration at the start, but running both addons seems like it would be unnecessary and use up a good chunk of additional memory resources on my system, but I’m not necessarily sure. Any thoughts?

i think both uMatrix and NoScript can achieve the same goal but based on a different concept/approach. IMO NoScript’s approach make more sense because if you land on the site that you’ve never visit before, you’re protected whereas uMatrix allow all 1st party domain by default.

I understand Mozilla has been slow with incorporating important APIs for WebExtensions, but wasn’t the webextension delay related to Giorgio splitting NoScript into 2 different addons? 1 for maintaining TorBrowser(v52 ESR) and 1 for WebExtensions(v57+)? I remember reading that Giorgio was working closely with Mozilla on WebExtensions implementations, so it kind of surprised me there were still delays.
Got hacked early this week & NoScript prevented the implants from connecting out.
Not the first time it’s saved me, won’t be the last. Feeling really exposed until the new version is ready. Ladies & gents – never browse unprotected. The best things really are free.

Well before these NoScript issues, I had a BIG problem with Firefuzz. I used to use a very effective organizing tool, TGM (Task Groups Manager). First, its author, "Alex Shootingstar", seems to have disappeared in the 2011 tsunami. Then, the Firefuzz crew removed a lot of components that TGM needed. Reminds me of NASA’s program to lightweight the Space Shuttle, until Challenger blew up.
If anyone is interested in reviving TGM, maybe we can get a new Category here on Hackademix. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

NoScript is the best script/ad blocker, and the only reason I stick to Firefox too.

I absolutely love noscript. This program bugs my girlfriend, because she doesent like to click on "S" icon (the forse is strong in her, yea right). I tired to explain that Noscript is like an antivirus program, only better, because for the first time, the user gets to choose what is good, whats not.

Totally agree with your nr 1 responder Gabriel. As I noticed f*ing ads populating my screen all of a sudden, like with chrome and Ie, I noticed the absence of you icon.
WTF! … MOST add-ons are nice to have, there’s just ONE that is a MUST-HAVE, and that’s yours. The knowledge that when visiting a new site I don’t know, it can’t do ANYTHING but display is really reassuring. Especially with all the ransomware nowadays.
And when a website that I visit frequently tells me their sop-story ‘we depend on ads, blah-di-blah’ and asks me to turn the blocker off, I’ll do it to make the equation more fair.
So I was all geared up to do a roll back of FF, but luckily I found this site on time.

I tried to visit a site I frequent after the Auto Update to 57 and got both pop ups and redirects. Within 4 clicks I had another page open trying to make me install another firefox update. Obviously a scam/malware update.

First thing I did after firefox updated and there was not a working NoScript, downgraded back to the last working firefox noscript version. That is how much I use and need this program! Thanks for all the work on one of the staple firefox extensions.

Tried Firefox Quantum without NoScript. Had no idea what a shitshow the internet has become! Half hour later I switched back to Firefox 56 WITH NoScript. Just can’t do without. Waiting patiently so I can re-upgrade.
Absolutely agree with post #183 , system restored to Firefox 56 and will review situation when new NoScript available . Bit of a nuisance what happened to Foxy Proxy as well . Thank you for all the hard work , I’m a UK OAP but I have made a small donation previously to NoScript .

With FF57 and the old No Script not working, I have a greater appreciation for the developer. No Script is a must. Like others have said, I feel "nekkid" without it now! Can’t wait for the FF57 version to come out. I will now donate more often as once No Script is gone, I realized how important it is.
Made the mistake of clicking "update" wihtout checking, now stuck with 57 and can’t browse without NoScript. Hope it will be ready soon.
BTW, excluding some visual changes, 57 is eaxctly the same as 56.* versions. Same massive memory hog even without addons, couldnt find the slightest difference in speed.

The past few days have been educational. I under appreciated how fast sites load when scripts are disabled. The unconstrained scripts are pervasive. Scripts open new windows, new tabs, play videos with the volume maxed out. Even after I close all of the tabs there must be scripts running because something keeps pegging one of the cores in CPU. Restarting Firefox abates this this last issue for awhile. Keep up the good work. I’m looking forward having NoScript again.

I believe that NoScript should be permanently added into Firefox, it’s critical to the functionality of the browser. You should work with the developers to integrate it into the browser permanently. there are reasons why this is a good idea, security and guarantee that its always working and can’t be uninstalled, and that theres no gaps in coverage like there is now.

OK, I installed FF 52.5 ESR- and NoScript was still disabled with no option for being re-enabled, so I had to re-install NoScript as well.
There is another extension called NoScript Something on Mozilla’s Extension page (not the one I wanted), so check carefully before installing that you have selected the one you actually want.
Thx for your plugin. I use it for many many years and it kept me save for all the long way. So this is time to say thank you for your hard work! Keep it up!

I’ve been paying for house and car insurance every year for years and never had occasion to use them, thankfully. Until now I’d never paid to support noscript, and yet it has genuinely protected me from all sorts of tracking and threats daily for just as long. I’ve just donated… I should have done so a long time ago. Mozilla claims to make the safest browser, but it’s Giorgio that makes it the safest, not Mozilla. I don’t care whether I use Firefox or Pale Moon or whatever; but it’s got to run noscript. Giorgio, I’m truly indebted to you as are many others for making the web a safer place to browse. I feel much better now. Uninstalled 57 …reinstalled 56.0.2…and poof, just like that noscript is back. And I even remembered to copy my profile before doing that. Move the profile back into the folder and wham…back in business. I changed the auto update to just let me know, and it is actually asking me to upgrade again….No thanks, at least until you guys get NS10 figured out. Thanks again to everyone. Highly recommended.

Not that I’m aware of. Searching the firefox addons gives some results, but nothing of relevance afaik. What I’ve done is just disabling javascript altogether, with the disadvantage that many sites won’t work at all or just partly works. If you’re ok with that you can by:
1. Open about:config
2. Search for javascript.enabled
3. Doubleclick on the line so the value change from true to false
If you want to enable javascript again, just doubleclick on the line again.
Remember to change it back to default when NoScript 10 is available.

Long time Noscript user. I didn’t know uMatrix until Tuesday, but after being pointed to it as a possible replacement on the day FF57 was released I now like it. The way the ‘matrix’ concept has been implemented offers a lot of control over what to load from what resource. That said, I will have a good look at Noscript 10 once it has been released. Just my opinion, YMMV.

on an insecure Fx version while they wait for NS Quantum.
While you’re waiting but still want to experience the Web as Giorgio has enabled for us for the last 10+ years (what a champion!)the best (ie securest) advice for you both is to get yourselves an ESR 52.5.0 version, which covers all the security patches that have been made for 57 along with a fully updated set of NS changes.
56 isn’t, repeat isn’t, patched securely any more. The last thing you need is for some nasty site
to crash Fx on you and get access to your system – even though the odds of that are quite remote if
you haven’t ‘trusted’ that site with NS.
Save your current profile; delete Fx; get ESR 52.5.0 from the great range here:

Start ESR 52.5.0
Close ESR 52.5.0
Replace profile with your saved one.
Rinse and go back to a safer and cleaner Web until NS Quantum turns up for you to carry into
the future as the best Web shield.

in the waiting time, just a quick question, i have lost my ability to use no Script for about a month now, on the previous update. Well now that FF57 is all over, no need to ask for something but did anyone have the same problem?
PS i haven’t waited for an add-on this long, i keep on earing about great addons on Chrome (about many different domains) but i can’t resolve to use it :D , even if FF can climb up to 8GB of RAM over a weekend when left alone on my work pc…
NS vanishing after that update is covered on the main NS landing page; it is an easy fix and NS stays in place afterwards Just follow the embedded link and do what it says.
I feel guilty about not donating so this and several other wonderful programs, but 17 years of chronic illness, and a new, THIRD chronic illness stopping me from any sort of work, I am nearly penniless, and have to prioritise what little I do have on my young daughter.

As a software developer of many years, I realize what a contribution you’ve been making to the world for years, and I understand the enormous effort that’s gone into NoScript over time.
However, as a software developer of many years, I’ve also participated in enormous software disasters, including situations where a release was due "at the end of the week," but ended up being postponed for months.
Since this release is so important to so many people, I’m requesting an honest assessment of where the development effort stands. Are we looking at a delay of a few days, or a few weeks and months?
Like everyone else I’ve been on here ever since my Firefox was updated and there was no NoScript icon to be seen. What a relief to know Giorgio is keeping up the good work – huge thanks for your efforts. I look forward to the new Firefox but without (even better) NoScript it will be half the browser it was, so I’m checking back regularly while making do with Chrome for the next few days.

Giorgio, I tried to get your NoScript 10, but no success — all I’ve got is: THIS ADD-ON IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH YOUR VERSION OF FIREFOX. (NOT COMPATIBLE WITH FIREFOX QUANTUM).
You mentioned that you made NoScript 10, to run on Firefox 57/Quantum. True or not?

Having been involved in many software projects, including some
disasters, here’s my take about what’s going on:
* On Monday, they had a list of things that had to be done, and they
thought the would meet the Friday deadline.
* During the week, they were working almost 24 hours a day to finish,
but things got added to the list that they had forgotten about.
* By Friday, it was clear that they weren’t going to be ready. In the
worst case scenario, they discovered a major flaw in the design that
means the product won’t work at all. So they all went to bed to get
some sleep, and leave until today how to deal with the disaster.
* Today, they’re sitting in a conference room (or meeting online) to
discuss what to do. They’ll be looking at releasing an incomplete
product, and they’ll even be considering whether it’s possible
somehow to get the old version working in the new FF.
* Once they come up with a disaster recovery strategy, they’ll
announce it, probably within 24 hours.
Of course that’s just speculation. Maybe they’ll announce the release
of the finished product instead. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Really appreciate your hard work over all the years! Take your time on this version. And don’t mind the bullies and whiners who are complaining that the latest version of your free, open source, and amazing program isn’t out when they want it to be.
Thank you so much for working on an update! I have been using no script for years. It’s the first thing I check for when Firefox is updated and with the newest update I was like WTF??? I cannot imagine using Firefox without it! Thanks again!
In the meantime I tried the suggested uMatrix. It’s actually not that bad, it can be used to bypass the time until noscript is ready.
After many years of using noscript, I felt completely vulnerable without scripting protection. If you go for uMatrix make sure to delete:
* 1st-party * allow
* 1st-party frame allow
in your rules settings and you have the same as noscript.
I’ll like noscript much better and will definitely switch back as soon as it’s ready – just for the meantime.

The update originally suggested the possibility of same day availability but clearly there were contingencies. Apparently the "definitely by the end of the week" is out as well. I think the lack of communication after being fed the hope of a quick fix is what’s provoking some of the less patient posts here. The way this is unfolding belies the respect for a market that has enjoyed a product whose function is clearly appreciated.
Bad news would be better than no news that leaves us hanging after being fed hope that could not be fulfilled.
Decided to roll v.56.0.2 back to ESR 52.5.0 just to be safer.

There are some workarounds Giorgio suggested while we wait, read the post please! Even disabling all javascript is a possibility.The world ain’t stopping just because we have to wait some days or have to do some workarounds in the mean time. Give Giorgio some space, and calm down. I’m sure we’ll have a solution soon enough! :)

In the meantime, I’m using SeaMonkey with noscript enabled, which is a great little browser on it’s own.
Let’s just wait until it is done. It will most probably be done these days.
Sometimes bugs or oversights come up close to the aspired end of a development period… And then you got to fix them – and rushing those fixes usually makes the problems bigger.
Also – a developer still is a human being. Which means, he can also be having others things to do all of a sudden.

Ppl need to direct their anger at mozilla, Giorgio told us what 2 do if u wanted FF with NoScript, that being said an update would be very appreciated. Also as suggested try uMatrix in the meantime, its interface is a little cumbersome but works much the same way. Took a few minutes to figure it out and don’t remember many must-block scripts so have to micro-manage but better than nothing. Thanks staff at NoScript.

First off, thank you for the time and energy you put into this program. Having not had it the past several days reminds me just how vital it is to me. I’ve worked behind the scenes on things before myself and know how often that can go unappreciated, as folks don’t always realize the effort that goes into a finished product.
Secondly, to folks who are irate, I might remind you that there are often unforeseen issues that can not be fully determined until the program is actually tried out, which they likely could not DO until 57 was released. Also, keep in mind that there was a time when patches for issues could take months and months; having to wait a few days while they work out the bugs is a small price to pay. Be patient. These are good folks working to resolve the issue when many might have decided not to; I’ve seen a great many programs and projects go to the wayside and stop updating, so try to appreciate the fact that they ARE striving to keep updated.
I installed Firefox ver ESR 52.5.5,but when I log off,or restart my computer,it updates to the Firefox ver 57.I tried looking in how to prevent updating,but couldn’t find anything.
To all you people getting your panties in a knot, lighten up! How do you pay for free software? Notice the link on the NoScript page? Know what "donate" means? Giorgio has been kind enough to offer this add on for FREE. What about his other commitments like his job and family? You expect him to drop everything, work 24 hours a day because you "paid"? If you don’t like it, don’t let the door hit you on the way out…
I’d rather wait and be assured that the developer has covered all angles, and the add on works as it should. Regarding Quantum? I’ve been using it with Ghostery, Decentraleyes, and HTTPS everywhere. I find it super fast and have no issues. Along with my other security software and a custom hosts file going through a VPN, I don’t feel any more vulnerable. I also don’t use Facebook or any of the other sketchy social networking sites or apps.

Is there a way of getting videos to work. I usually do not allow more than a top domain. The Chive videos are forever obscured when I’m using NoScript. Someone must know the entrance to the tunnel and how likely I am to die.

Where on Earth does the week end on Saturday ? For me the week begins on Monday which suggests the last day is Sunday; this is much of the world. Americans tend to think of Sunday being the first day of the week. Ah, but maybe you mean Saturday is the last day of the week. That would make sense indeed as that’s how it is in America – but definitely not the world over! But I suppose that goes for a lot of things and to be fair Americans aren’t the only ones doing that kind of thing; it’s not even just the calendar.
Nevertheless in software sometimes patience is required. As a programmer I am also a user and too often I see devs and users do not exist in harmony and it’s to the detriment of all involved! Patience is also important because you want quality over quantity. Many users don’t understand that and sadly many developers don’t either.

Well, I can’t surf naked any longer, so I’ve installed uBlockOrigin. It’s not NoScript, but it helps with some of the more egregious background requests and stuff.
Hopefully the new NoScript will be finished and out soon. But uBlock seems like a decent figleaf.

I decided to install uMatrix for the time-being. I deleted all the default allow rules so that it blocks everything by default and then I only allow what is needed. I hope NoScript will be released soon.

I have kept Firefox because of NoScript, otherwise I would not use it. Consider that. Think of it carefullly. You should have forked NoScript and made it built-in if you could not maintain compatibility. Then the author could continue his work there. He has *a lot of work* to do because everyday there are thousands who target this thing. This addon is an essential part for Tor browser also. It offers a very important functionality.
It’s weird that the "Find a Replacement" button leads here, instead of to a viable replacement.

I hope NS is available soon. I was just hit by some drive-by ransomware! I had uBlock Origin enabled, but that didn’t help.
I had reminded myself a few days ago not to go to any untrusted/unknown sites, but I forgot my own advice and suffered the consequences of surfing naked. I forgot how vulnerable a browser is to scripts!
NS should be required for FireFox if they are going to remain vulnerable.
It feels strange that I didn’t have to allow scripts to be able to post here.

It *is* necessary to give some kind of update and a bit more information about the hold-ups. I say this because the usual rule seems to be that anything down for a week is dead forever. I remember sites ranging from SyFy to the ACLU abruptly announcing that their forums were closed down for a couple of weeks … the latter came back up a few years later, the former not at all. Unless you keep your audience, the point of having an update at all quickly goes away.
We thought the internet was going to be an age of freedom, but thanks to the duplicity of the computer scientists, it is more like the redefinition of a book. When I was a kid people said a book was a helpful resource; you could open it just out of curiosity and see something new. Now they should teach kids that a book is a dangerous thing, an evil thing, something that demands a contract that could brand you for life just for looking at it, or wipe out whatever else you had on any device to read it, that continually watches you, that is finding out things about you while doing nothing for you but trying to make you click on it to let it. Tell the kids that a book is not something you read to learn something new, but something you submit to to show your loyalty if you are absolutely sure that it says exactly what your masters want you to believe.

thx for the hard work. i am using it for some years already. it never made any problems, is easy to use and gives me a feeling of safety and privacy in the web.
at first people made jokes about me being paranoid, now they ask me were to get it and how to use it.
since i am a software developer myself i feel with you regarding the delay in the release.
looking forward to being able to use it again soon with the new firefox. to get back this feeling of safety and control of what the websites i visit are allowed to do and to track.

@AA No matter what you (as a developer) do, you always make it wrong for someone. Just take a look at #364 or #343 and #366 or #369:
If you make an announcement, people will take it as a fact and expect you to deliver on date. If you then, for which ever reason, are delayed, they will complain (#364 or #343).
If you make no announcement, because you can not guarantee that you will be able to deliver on date, people will complain as well (#366 or #369).
If you are a developer, you will understand that dilema. Therefore he already is doing the best thing he can do: he is working on the project and is taking all time he needs.
So just be happy that he is investing his private time to work on the migration so that we, at some point, will be able again to use this fantastic Add On. Or even better: donate some money to show that you are not taking his work for granted and see all the time and work he is putting into it.

Definitely one of the best pieces of free software that I have been using – for FREE – so those who are moaning perhaps should look for alternatives that are costly and come with a Service Level Agereement. Hope the development is going well on the new version! Happy to beta test if required!
Giorgio, thanks for NoScript, both the XUL version and the upcoming WebExtension version. Been using your NoScript add-on for over 10 years now, ever since I learned about it. It is because of both Mozilla and *you* that I can safely browse Web sites easily, on Free Software platforms. If I want to be extra-safe, then we add the Tor Browser team.
You’re thus part of the "tri-fecta" that underpins much, much safer use of the Internet, and for this, I am grateful.

Firefox Quantum 57.x is so "awesome" that it won’t play the audio portion of any video that it displays. No other application running on my computer has that problem, so it probably has nothing to do with 64-bit Windows 7 Pro SP2 (fully updated) or the hardware (a do-it-yourself build).
The Mozilla Support forum search feature is so awesome that you’d better use just one "keyword" to search for information and advice. Even then, it returns thousands of results and the likelihood that the most recent or at least one that is useful is among the first 25 is essentially zero.
Mozilla is so awesome that after every time they release a "major" Firefox overhaul, I cannot log-in to the support forum. No, the password manager hasn’t forgotten my user name / email address / password. Mozillas hasn’t deleted them from their records, either, because I cannot create a new account with the same credentials.
So, I’ve decided to uninstall the Quantum awesome POS with its ugly, user-hostile, and inefficient Google Chrome UI, and run Firefox 52 ESR instead. Maybe Mozilla will solve the problem eventually, but I wonder how they are going to resolve it when there is no way for someone to let them know that it exists. And how are they going to let ME know that they have solved it?
But it doesn’t matter much to me any more. Before ESR expires, I probably will have installed Windows 10 and started running Edge instead. I am totally fed-up with Mozilla and its inablility to recognize and appreciate what works for the adults who use it in their eagerness to just make something "new" and "fresh" to impress their peers.
Good luck with NoScript 10. I feel as though I’m saying farewell to an old, valued and trusted friend. I am sure that it will continue to be a far superior product than the web browser whose features it extends and augments will ever be. NoScript is the difference between a seasoned professional and the latest crop of sophomore software designers and programmers that evidently comprise the Firefox development "team".

Installed NoScript Quantum. The user GUI is a bit confusing so far. I like the old NoScript set up. I wish they had just stuck with the old GUI menus and not gone with this new menu.
I miss the easier way to allow and revoke certain scripts. Sometimes I kept allowing one script at a time to see which one was needed, then revoking the ones I didn’t need. I don’t think you can do this with the Quantum version? I guess I’ll have to get used to it unless I want to see ads.

Kinda miss being able to temporarily allow then disable scripts with a single click though the popup style window is nice to actually see the individual objects. I think playing with the new interface is in order so I can better familiarize myself with how things run.
A side note- I was completely unaware that this is the work of a single individual and not a team. Speechless…
Adding to #425: I had to deactivate noscript, due to my inability to differ between scipts i need and i don’t (for minimum site functionality). Playing around in menus, setting checkboxes doesn’t give me a clue.
I agree to #426, the old style with its great power is somehow missing.

NoScript 10 does work with Sandboxie. Works with SBIE same as before. I havent found any conflict. Can you tell what issue you are having, here or at the Sandboxie forum.

Temporary permissions can be given by clicking on "S", then on the clock appearing ! TO me it looks strange that so many people didn’t find how to make it.

Seems like enabling "script" in a Custom configuration also enables it in the "Default". Is it really meant that way?
Now that this messed up my "Default" configuration, is there a default you can recommend?

It’s rather hidden behind an additional click, which I think is very unfortunate. You firstly have to click on the "TRUSTED" icon, and *then* you need to click on the fiddly little icon of a clock *inside* that button (and which only appears at that point) to toggle from permanent to temporary trust.
Hopefully this part of the UI will be improved. I think it’s a bad idea to require an additional click to make the permission temporary, and I don’t like the fact that the bit of the UI that you need to click on moves around whenever buttons are selected — so you don’t even know precisely *where* the second click goes until after that animation has finished! If this general approach to the buttons is kept, then the temporary trust option *really* needs its own button.
Assigning temporary trust is the thing I *normally* want to do, so I want that to be as quick and easy to do as possible, and right now it is quite cumbersome.

I honestly have no idea how to do this, maybe you could have an option for computer-illiterate numpties (I am one) to install the older version.
There used to be options at the right hand bottom of my screen but it’s disappeared now.

It seems to be working well in my environment so far. (Firefox57 x64. Win7 x64)
There may be a drawback to the installation yet.
However, it seems that the installation was completed by downloading the installation file "noscript-10.1.1 Xpi" locally as a file, and then dropping and dragging the files on Firefox.
I hope to be able to add NoScript on Android FireFox as well.
I have had more than a little fun fingering this out… but after crashing FF a couple times I think I got it. The full page of urls and their settings can be a real can o worms, but if one is patient it kinda works. The learning curve is decidedly steeper than the comfortable old version, but I still gots a couple brain cells left and I’ll fire them suckers up!
btw, FF 57.0 on 16.04 Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Nice to have NoScript back! I feel much better now. Many thanks.
With noscript inavailable for a few days, I’ve found that Noscript has copied some functions from umatrix. Now I think umatrix is powerful and simple and a better choice combined with ublock origin. Bye Noscript. Too bad was great before.
Looks like right now the extension disables scripting but does not process HTML noscript tags – this breaks the graceful degradation of many sites, e.g. DuckDuckGo.
I believe this is caused by an underlying Firefox "bug" where a CSP that blocks scripts will NOT cause the noscript tags to be processed. That’s compliant to the spec but rather useless. (I can’t find the link right now.)
So is there any update when this behavior (or the underlying firefox/spec bug) will be fixed?

What’s the difference between "Trusted" and "Custom" in the site settings? (Except that I can turn off "Scripts" when I select "Custom".)
I can’t seem to set the sub-options like "Font", "Media" etc. individually per site. Whenever I turn one of them on or off, no matter if it’s a "trusted" or "custom" entry, it toggles for all sites.

‘Temporary’ is a tiny tiny clock-icon at the end of the word ‘Trusted’.
I have the Dutch translated version, and the text roles over for being longer translated from English, but that is a translation or space problem.
I find the GUI confusing untill now, but I will concentrate on the options on the left only, these are more ore less the old ones. The green lock on the right for ‘Match HTPPS content only’ misleads me a lot.
The UI is very confusing compared to the old one. It does not seem to be consistent either. The number of links change if you temporarily activate one? instead of displaying it now active? No Idea what the padlock means? Please go back to the old interface much preferred it. Have gone back to old Firefox with old noscript for now and appreciate how good it is and the fact it works as expected :)
and I forgot to ask is it even possible to temporarily activate one script at a time in the new version/UI? For some websites I like activating just the scripts that are needed to use it (and that can be just 2-3 out of lots of mainly advertising ones) I certainly could not seem to do it using the new UI or maybe I was just confused? I also don’t like the new UI, you can’t even see the full FQDN’s. Also it is currently impossible to allow scripts when using private Mode.
Would like to have the old style menu back with something tiny at the end to get access to the new submenu.
Happy to see that NoScript is back. Hope the new UI becomes heavily improved or replaced over time.

I too like the old UI better. Specifically, I like "temporarily allow" and "allow" having different buttons. And some better explaination of what the toggleable padlock icon does would be nice (messing with it seems to disallow whatever its next to too).
One thing I miss is the ability to toggle global script allowing on and off from the menu.
Another thing I really miss is the ability to disable automatic page reloads (that is, when it reloads a page after you change a permission and exit the menu). This is very important when you are in a form that you shouldn’t reload the page for, but which you have realized that you might need the scripts on for.

I deleted this new version of No Script. It is a pain to use. I like the old GUI better. PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD NO SCRIPT without the Google Chrome GUI. It sucks.

I’m just a little bit confused about the new UI. In the old version you could just click on one of the domains and it would enable/disable scripts for it (and show that it’s enabled/disabled), now you have to click on it, then check the "scripts" box. Without clicking on it first, it also doesn’t tell you if scripts are enabled or disabled unless it’s set to "trusted".
Would it be possible to get back the old UI without all the extra checkboxes (object, media, frame,…)?
I just noticed something weird going on on e.g. youtube:
If I enable scripts for googletagservices.com, it also automatically enables them for doubleclick.net, gstatic.com and all the others.
Since it’s doing this, it also won’t load any youtube videos, it’s only showing a black screen with the grey loading circle – even after enabling all the scripts, reloading the website and restarting FF.
Please rollback previuos GUI back. The new GUI is not user friendly.

An addition to #458. I restarted my PC (Win 7 64bit, FF 57, no addons apart from NoScript and ABP) and it’s still doing it – not only on Youtube but also on Amazon and every other website I load. It looks like it enables every other script too if you enable a single one but it isn’t actually doing it, it’s just setting the checkmark.
Today NoScript’s fonts and icons have become bigger. I don’t understand if it’s an update or a bug.
if it’s an update it was better before, now the font and the above icons are too big.

In the last 24 hours something seem to broken the addon, it blocks everything or nothing at all. I specify a site as trusted hit refresh and nothing happens, it also seem to be enabling everything but what I want it to. This problem only started today , last night it was functioning a 100%, now the only solution seems to be making pages temporary allow , or else it just blocks what you want to watch/read. Even had to temp allow this site to the captcha…..
Rolled back to FF56 entirely because of how bad the new Noscript is.
No right click menu? Really dawg? UI is awful, old version worked and didn’t look like shit. It’s so bad that I’m spending my own free time digging through the internet to find some dark corner just to say so in a way you might see.
It looks like the new version needs some polishing.

PLEASE bring back the old one. I spend an hour trying to figure this out and I am a software design engineer. This thing is so un-intuitive. What the hell do the buttons do, there is no help or youtube video to describe. please please pleases bring the old one back it worked so well. This sucks ass dude, like it sucks ass so bad. I am sorry I know you worked so hard on it. please forgive me for being negative.
I, too, miss the old UI. It was a PITA to enable one domain at a time until a site worked, but now I can’t even do that. Still, I get it that you have been scrambling to adapt to major changes to FF, and I appreciate it. Time for me to donate! I hope you will eventually find time to provide a help function. You may think all those icons are self-explanatory, but they are not, at least not to this user.

Your’re right, erikdenhouter. I don’t understand feedback in which people say that the software someone gives you for free "looks like shit" and stuff @(#467). I believe there are better ways to express yourself and to contribute with constructive feedback, like almost all of the responses above.
Again, this is a great software and I use it for years. To this date, no other solution comes even closer to secure FF as this one. And since it’s offered as freeware, my greatest concern is that one day it won’t be there anymore. So I remind the developer how important it is and I thank him very much.
I am missing the right click menu.
When a page opens new window sometimes there is no "top" of the newly opened window so you cannot block script on that window.
Also for a last week or so the noscript doesn’t work. It forces it’s own rules regardless of what I do.
Please, put the right click menu back on.

So, it appears since our boss rolled out FF Quantum that NoScript is causing issues with not being able to click Google search results, but you can right-click and open them in a new tab. Did some testing to confirm it was NoScript (disabling add-ons one at a time). Also, enabling scripts for domains seems to cause issues with some websites like Amazon (choosing jacket size in a drop down for example) where it hangs and never updates the page. Saw this on another page or two, but those didn’t have interactive content per se. Not sure if this helps, and I’ve not found any similar examples from folks, but maybe it’ll help. Love my NoScript. :)

The new noscript is not properly functional. When I click it my browser semi minimises and I have to maximise it again. The noscript window then detaches and comes up as a popup style window.
I click the sites that I want to allow and categorise them as trusted but they revert back to default, no matter howmany times I click the refresh button/icon on noscript. I am still confused about the green and red locks. As to temporary allow, the less said the better. It is not user friendly, it is not intuitive and it isnot understandable.
But I still use it because I prefer all the annoyance and frustrations of the new noscript to not having any script blocker.
I understand it is still work in progress and I really hope it is fixed and operational like the old version that everyone was satosfied with. If it gets to be as good as the old version, I will consider a decent donation. If not I shall look at some other browser and ditch FF altogether, change to something that will provide me with inbuilt security such as Avast browser

"Lookes like shit…" is an expression that is not depending on paid or free software, it is an opinion, no matter how offending it may look.
Of course, I agree, most people have their behaviour polished to get around. For this, raw and somehow unforgiving responds mostly escape my attention, but still I think they are a part of the feedback, so not to be missed by the maker as you suggested :)

tonight, when I click the NoScript icon, my Firefox exits full screen mode, and as soon as I exit the NoScript window by clicking on the page I visit, NoScript opens in another window, often behind FF. Then I have to click a window away (NoScript), and a window back to full screen (FF).

Give NoScript the flick and try Pi-Hole, if you have a spare VM or old PC lying about, it’s a piece of cake to setup. Thanks FF for killing the interface for our favorite add-ons. It’s just to different.

I am staying on the ESR for now, because I can’t understand the new NS. I am afraid that I might allow something I shouldn’t have because I don’t know what I am doing. I concur with a lot of folks here and want something at least similar to the old UI.
I was excited to update and get going again, but I just can’t. Not yet anyway. I will be reading the posts and looking for any indication that the interface gets easier to understand for "dummies" like me.
New version has major issues, and a change in the last 24 hours really made things worse. As in the browser window partially minimizing every time you click on the NS icon. Having to maximize it every time after closing the NS window. Ugh!!!
Also, changes are not being saved and there’s no longer a button to "make temporary permissions permanent". Why was that taken away? Who wants to have to re-do permissions every time you visit the same site again.
Sorry old boy, have to give your new NS the boot. The thing does not even save anything except google. Nothing else. As soon as the tab is closed the settings are lost no matter how many times you refresh the NS settings. Infact on some pages (for whatever reason) the settings don’t stay even when not leaving the page. An example is XE.COM. I set the NS settings to allow xe.com then click the refresh page icon, then open NS again and it is back to Default settings that were there a few seconds ago.
Bye for now. Once I read that the thing is working I may consider using it but at the moment it is more hassle that it is worth. Free or not, if the thing does not work it is useless. I will use Avast Browser which is much safer than FF and NS combined
not sure what you did to this but it’s getting uninstalled causes more headaches then it ever did before. Thanks for your hard work in the past but I’m done trying to be nice to this addon.
I’ve been using the new NS now for a bit. Getting used to it now. It does remember what you untrust. I went through and untrusted all the crap and when I go back to sites, it remembers that I don’t trust those scripts. It just takes a bit of a learning curve after using the old GUI for quite a while.
I’ve learned that you can Default something in order to get a certain part of a website to work, then go right back and untrust it once you’re done.
I would like the right click functions back though. That was convenient. If net neutrality is destroyed, I guess it won’t matter anymore. One more stab at what democracy we have left in America.
