I'm sure it was a lot of work to create a scene like this in Vue but it simply looks so unrealistic. Video games even look better these days...

I like the lighting though...

Not usually a fan of the 3D scenes either as I prefer a photo on my desktop, but I can really appreciate the hard work put in and it looks fantastic. Reminds me of Greece. :)

I'm sorry folks, but this render is rather blah. Ask yourself this: If this was an actual photograph would you like it? After all, it's attempting to imitate a photograph. To me it looks fake and unrealistic. I'm not a fan of Vue creations, but I'll admit to having a few of Richard's images in my wallpaper folder. However, with so many stunning images awaiting release from the Loupe, I'm disappointed that one like this makes it out before more deserving images.

Good to know, thanks..

while I like the composition and lighting a lot, I do wish that rendering engines would realize that tree bark isn't flat and that leaves don't grow on a flat plane relative to their branches...

This almost looks like a photo of a painting with the texture of the canvas flowing through.

I like the left side of the image, the grass on the hillside looks pretty. But the right side looks way too fake and bleh as mentioned above. Dont beat yourself up tho, i doubt anyone here could do better ;)

I really like many of your other works, but compared to some other fantastic photographs on the lupe this is disappointing...

I can pretty much see that you guys pick photo's anymore so I probably won't be submitting anything anymore, unless I happen to take a nice pic somewhere.Thanks..

I think it's sad that the scoffers seem to be driving Richard away. I think he should reconsider and take heart from the fact that his illustrations have regularly and repeatedly been voted onto the Loupe. This wouldn't happen if he didn't have plenty of fans. Unfortunately, those who vote for his work appear to be drowned out by the nags and naysayers. I often find Richard's work to be more mystical than realistic in any case. Realism, after all, is merely one style among many in the fine and graphic arts, and has no more intrinsic value than any other. His compositions, both naturalistic and abstract, are invariably excellent and I think he is one of the most creative artists to share his work with us here.

Not that I haven't had a quibble or two with something he's done from time to time. But I try to offer constructive criticism. Feedback is an essential part of the creative process. As an artist myself, I learned long ago that we need to be able to see our work through the eyes of others in order to grow. Yes, that process is often painful. It's essential, therefore, to learn to distinguish between vague and useless carping and real insight among our critics.

Please, Richard, don't let the black hats win.

@Richard Mohler, don't let the carpers chase you away. I don't submit here, but I love this site because of the beautiful wallpaper.
What irritates me to no end is those who do not submit photos and nitpick a photo apart. Makes me want to leave. Also, criticism should be constructive by those who do submit photos.
But much of what comes from others' computers screens in negative criticism says more about the poster than the wallpapers that are chosen from the Loupe. Turn the other cheek.

I also don't think you should stop submitting Richard (although I know how you feel, I have a whole lot of sunsets that I've refrained from submitting because people seem to be sick of them). My only suggestion would be to do more fantasy stuff like Bergs which people won't try and compare to photos.

Well, shoot. If I've said it once, I've said it a million times...

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I echo what WhiteDog and Lenegal said. Don't believe me? Look at the comments that I have made on the last, say, thousand wallpaper submissions on IFL. It is making me crazy that *most* of the people around here want photographs and anything outside of the box gets panned. While I disagree slightly with Lenegal's request that only submitted artists can make criticisms (that would leave me out) I applaud the sentiment.

I suppose that I am only commenting here to stay consistent. Let's see more digital creations like this one! In my opinion, this looks great! I love fantasy prints, and the quality of your workmanship is outstanding.

I live in the real world. Boring! Give me more fantastical shots!

So many ingrate a-holes roaming around on here...it's a shame that their impotence could threaten a staple of this site from creating anymore work. Talk about unfair to Richard and the many many people who have thoroughly enjoyed his work over the years.

People hide their derision behind the concept of constructive criticism, but actual constructive criticism has long been absent from the comments on here.

This photo would have been accepted a little better if there was a more detailed description of what you were trying to accomplish first, not that many even do read the info panel or know what Vue is. My first ride through was not the most pleasing but after sitting back and looking at this from a different perspective I can see it for what you wanted us to see. This site has a lot of straight photography shots and I do notice quite an uproar when a shot is enhanced. Most of those as well didn't explain what they were trying to do. You have some great submissions so never give up and do it for yourself.

As for the people that feel no comments should be made unless you submit, where would the world be without critics. It offers a different perspective of what another person sees through their eyes. That is why there is a forum to discuss a submission. An artist should never take it personally because only they know what they see in any given art form. Take what people say and use it or not in the future, it can only broaden your own artistic level. There are people that are just plain rude and nasty, those are the ones that should be ignored.

Never Give Up!

To those who misunderstood what I said, I did not mean that those who do not submit should not comment on submissions. It just irks me that some of them are the biggest critics of artists' work.
That is all I meant.

Thanks.

I thought that I would try to share some "constructive criticism," as I have not really seen any in the reviews fo this image thus far. I'm a photographer, and I normally don't care too much for Vue rendered scenes, but this one caught my eye. It reminds me of the areas around my home in central Alabama, and I like that in this image.

Now if Richard intended for this image to not replicate a photograph, then these don't apply, but if that was his intention, then these are my qualms:

1.) The leaves in the center of this image that jut out in front of the sky seem too "squashed." I find that the majority of the leaves look quite real, but those in that section just look 2D to me.

2.) The tree limbs and trunk in the upper left corner look too "chiseled." They need to be rounded a bit more, and the detail in the bark could use some more definition. The color differences seem to be a little too oval shaped to look natural.

3.) The land slope between the two trees on the left side comes to a sharp cutoff, and that makes it seem unnatural, so maybe try rounding it more by playing with the shadows and coloring.

4.) Incorporating other shades of brown into the pathway would have made the image just pop a little more for me.

Other than that, I really like work. It is far, far better than anything I could have ever done on the computer, and I encourage Richard to keep at it.

One final blurb, I think people should be able to comment freely about images even if they may not appear to have submitted anything. I have submitted several pieces, but none have ever been chosen to be included on the website, and I imagine that there are many other reviewers who are in the same boat. However, I do feel that people should explain why they don't like an image instead of just saying that they do not like it.

And @Chris Ginn, I happen to love sunsets, and never get tired of seeing a beautiful one, so submit all that you want!

And @Richard Mohler, please do submit more!

It feels like I'm looking at a painting. Finally, something that's not another sunset or water shot.

Good job. :)

I think it in part depends on person's mood how they will see a picture. One day I can look at the same picture and really like it and other time extreme opposite.
For me this work really made my day, besides the reason that i'm craving for some sun here in Pacific NW :-)

Personally, I think that 3D renders are often far superior to photographs when used as background wallpapers. This is very nice and his other works are even better.
I can appreciate the art in this far more than some over processed sunset photo.
Cheers.

This is actually my favorite wallpaper :) Every single time I log onto my computer I love to see the relaxing cool colors jump out at me. I'm not much of a critic, but this has the richest and most soothing contrast I've ever seen in a IFL wallpaper.

I had to do a double take when i saw this picture because it looks exactly like the place i used to go running through every saturday morning. It's beautiful and i had to download it just for the memory because that place burned in the California fires a few years ago...
