Maldivian Night

February 4th, 2010

I took this photo during a full Moon night at the Huvafen Fushi Resort, North Malé atoll, Kaafu, Maldives. It was so bright that you could have easily read a newspaper that night!

I got rid of some human elements on the beach via Photoshop. Other than that, there has been no alteration. The original can be seen here.

Nikon D700, AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED at ƒ/2.8, 30 second exposure.

4°22'19.51"N, 73°22'17.42"E

Surreal.

Reminds me of the scene in the movie Contact when Jodie Foster lands on that lovely beach on the alien planet. Sans her stupid dad, of course.

Very nice. Good to get it filmed and photographed before it's underwater.

This was seriously at night? SO HARD to believe! I remember leaving my house at 4am for work some weeks ago and seeing a BEAUTIFUL full moon...it lit up the sky like crazy and it looked to be SOOOO close to Earth, but it wasn't that bright! I really love this picture though...the Nikon D700 made it happen! Thank you very much for sharing.

Lovely and vibrant but can I ask what the white flecks are ? Stars ? If so, why are they elongated ?
Cheers :)

Great photo!

@Clyde: I could be wrong, but I think the stars are slightly elongated because of the slight distance they would have shifted during the 30 second exposure. Same reason why the clouds are elongated.

First of all, thank you very much for all your kind comments!

@ Philippe Clairo:
You're one to talk! =D

@ knaim2:
Yes, it was indeed very hard to believe for me as well. Since I'm living in London, there's no moon light hitting the streets ever, due to all that stray light.

@ Clyde:
The white flecks are indeed stars. They seem to be streched since this picture is a long exposure of 30 seconds. Although the moon light has been very strong that night, it obviously didn't light up everything as it can be seen in the picture. The vibrant colors and brightness has only been achieved by leaving the shutter open for such a long period so that the sensor can collect all that light. Hope that clarifies it for you. ;-)
