memory in pixel (MIP)

Memory-In- Pixel (MIP) is a reflective display technology that requires extremely little energy and can be viewed in bright ambient light. Like the Mirasol display and the Electronic Paper Display( EPD), which also use reflective technology, MIP displays do not emit light; they can only be viewed when ambient light is present.

Memory-in-pixel displays are available with monochrome and multicolor display with eight colors. Because of their extremely low power consumption, they are especially suitable for smart wearables such as smart watches, smart wristbands, fitness trackers, medical wearables, electronic price labels( ESL) and portable medical measuring devices. Due to the extremely low power consumption, a long battery life is guaranteed. In addition, they can be used where bright ambient light argues against the use of emitting displays. such as in info terminals.

MIP displays are based on low-temperature poly silicon( LTPS), in which each individual pixel is addressable. Technically speaking, memory-in-pixel displays assign each individual pixel its own static RAM( SRAM) as a memory cell.

The bit-per-pixel cell structure has random access to the individual pixels, which are only refreshed when their content changes. Thus, the image information of each pixel is retained until the image information changes and the image is rebuilt. They operate without repetitive refresh and have extremely low power consumption. As an example of power consumption, a 32 MIP display with Full HD resolution has a power consumption of only 260 µW in the still image. Compared to TFT displays, the power consumption of MIP displays is less than 1%.
