Netflix Ad-supported Plans

A Netflix ad-supported plan allows you to enjoy movies and TV shows at a lower price.

Note:
A small percentage of devices that can play on ad-free Netflix plans can't be used with an ad-supported Netflix plan. This is because either the Netflix app or software on the device can't be updated to a version that supports ads.

Our ad-supported plan includes commercial breaks in most TV shows and movies. While our ad-free plans don’t include commercial breaks in on-demand titles, there may be limited commercial content, such as branded content or sponsorship messaging. We may also offer our members the chance to enjoy additional features like live or special events. Members under any of the subscription plans may have commercial breaks and other types of commercial messages on such content or additional features.

While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions. These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

How to sign up for ad-supported plans

If you're new to Netflix, you can sign up for an ad-supported plan as you would for any of our other plans.

If you're currently a Netflix member, you can change to an ad-supported plan.

How to check device compatibility

To check if your TV or streaming device is compatible with an ad-supported plan.

  • If you're already signed in to Netflix:

    1. On the home screen, go to the left to side to open the menu.

    2. At the bottom of the menu, go to the right side and select Get Help > Plan Compatibility.

  • If you aren't signed in:

    1. Open the Netflix app on your TV or streaming device.

    2. Select Get Help > Plan Compatibility.

Apple TV: Ad-supported plans are compatible only on Apple TV HD and later models with the latest software and app updates. Go to Apple’s support site to know your Apple TV model.

Why ad-supported plans are not available

You may not see an ad-supported plan option if:

  • Your device isn't compatible with an ad-supported plan. Follow the steps above to check if your device is compatible.

    Note:
A small percentage of devices that can play on ad-free Netflix plans can't be used with an ad-supported Netflix plan. This is because the Netflix app or software on the device can't be updated to a version that supports ads.
  • You're in a country where ad-supported plans are not available.

  • You have Netflix through a third-party billing partner or with a package. Please contact your provider to confirm plan availability.

    • If you switch to a payment method that is not billed by your provider, you can select an ad-supported plan once your new payment method is charged and your new billing period begins.

How ads are shown and length of ads

You can expect to see an average of about 4 minutes of ads per hour (this may vary based on the title you're watching).

You'll see ads before and during select TV shows and movies. Newly released movies only have ads before the title begins.

When an ad break starts, the number of ads in the ad break appears in the upper-right corner. Fast forward and skip aren't available when an ad is playing.

What titles are available

While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions. These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

How this affects Kids profiles

Ads will not be shown on Kids profiles.

How this affects Netflix games

Ads will only be shown before or during TV shows and movies, not games.

Why skipping/fast forwarding ads is not available

You cannot skip or fast forward ads, but you can pause playback during an ad. If you prefer to watch Netflix without ads, you can change to an ad-free plan.

Download limits

Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The limit will reset on the first of each month.

How this affects "Cast" functionality in Chromecast

Using a mobile device to watch Netflix on a TV isn't available on an ad-supported plan. To use your mobile device to watch Netflix on your TV, you'll need to change to an ad-free plan.

How to report an issue with an ad

You can provide feedback or report an issue with an ad when watching Netflix on your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or a computer web browser.

How ads are selected

At this time, ads may be selected based on your interactions with Netflix (such as the genre of content being viewed), your general location (such as city and state), and information that you provide to Netflix. Unless you have opted-out, ads may also be selected based on your use and/or interactions with various unaffiliated third party apps or websites across the Internet (behavioral advertising). If you opt-out of receiving behavioral ads, you will still see ads, but they will not be selected using behavioral advertising information.

What information Netflix collects

After you sign up for or change to an ad-supported plan and choose your primary profile, we ask for the account owner's date of birth and gender. We use this basic demographic data, as well as general location information based on your IP address, to help tailor the advertising and improve the product offering.

If you have questions about privacy and security, please visit our Privacy and Security Help Page. You can also learn more about privacy and how we use your data in our Privacy Statement.
