My laptop won't support SGX requirements for 4K Blu-Rays
Hey guys,
The other day, I was watching Resident Evil (2002) 4K on my laptop through the Prime Video app, then I saw a 4K external drive for sale on Amazon. Mind you, I don't have a 4K TV or Blu-Ray player ATM, so I figured this would be sufficient for me to finally make the jump to 4K Blu-Rays in the meantime until I get one (I already have an HDMI cable which I can stream from my laptop to my TV) and/or a PS5, which supports 4K. Unfortunately, I downloaded the needed software (Softlink Ultra HD Blu-Ray Advisor) and ran a test to see if my laptop would play UHD Blu-Rays, and it fills all of the needed requirements except having a 4K drive and supporting SGX. I've tried and tried to look for ways to enable SGX in the BIOS, but am having no such luck. I have an HP Pavillion 4K laptop with Windows 10, and I know it supports 4K playback, having watched several YouTube videos in 4K and streamed movies in 4K as of yesterday. If anyone can walk me through on how to enable SGX on my laptop so I can play 4K UHDs, that would be great. Thanks. |

I suggest you get a proper playback device.
No point you success turn on SGX as your current display not support HDR. 99% 4K UHD Disc is in HDR format, but due to your current hardware limitation, it will convert to SDR and HDR to SDR is never look as it suppose, it will be much darker than actual and won't look better than 1080 Blu-ray disc. 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc must have HDR Display with at least 500 nits. If your TV is 4K HDR capable, better get a 4K UHD blu-ray player or wait a while for PS5. Don't try playback from laptop as playback from PC to TV is not as good as it suppose also. The thread that you need to peruse here on the forums is 'The first UHD Blu-ray drive'.

Your laptop chipset probably doesn't have the SGX option in the bios.

1. 4K TV is a must.
You can't go any further without a 4K TV/monitor even you own a SGX enabled + 4K drive ready PC. 2. SGX is only available from Z170 to Z490 (and the same generation's laptop chipset). Z97 and below, Z590/B560/H510 and after, Intel HEDT, all AMD stuffs are all unavailable. For further information, see the link from my signature. Last edited by MelonGx; 08-26-2021 at 09:02 PM. |

Hii,
Buy a blu ray drive. Install the software, rip the 4k blu ray to your pc then watch it that way. Media player classic plays anything as long you have the codecs. also, you can install the intel drivers at the same time as your GPU drivers |

Development for Media Player Classic ended some time ago. MPC-BE+MPC Video Renderer (which I have not tried) or VLC are better options for playing UHD video files with HDR. However, a GPU that supports decoding HEVC is needed for smooth playback. |
