AMD Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix” mobile Ryzen CPU series to feature Zen4 cores?

AMD Phoenix to replace Rembrandt

AMD Ryzen 5000 “Cezanne” mobile processor series has only been available for a few weeks, but we are already learning about its successor and a successor to the successor.  

A new codename “Phoenix” has now been associated with the AMD Ryzen CPU series that will debut after Rembrandt. This codename had already appeared a far back as July 2020 after being named by a known leaker Komachi. At the time it wasn’t quite clear what Phoenix really is but a few months later we are starting to understand where it might land in the future Ryzen lineup.

AMD Phoenix is a mobile CPU series that would replace Rembrandt. The series would be the first Zen4 based mobile processor from AMD. Same as Rembrandt, Phoenix would also support DDR5 memory. Recently, new information was shared by another known leaker Patrick Schur. According to him, the CPU series will feature a new FP8 socket:

It is unsure why Phoenix would require a new FP8 socket over Rembrandt (expected to debut on the FP7 socket). However, one would guess that Phoenix may introduce PCIe Gen5 support, which would not be available with Rembrandt.

Coming at 5nm node?

What wasn’t mentioned in the tweet but has been widely commented on is that Rembrandt (mobile) and Warhol (desktop) Zen3+ series would be manufactured on a 6nm fabrication process. AMD has never confirmed that this might be the case, in fact, the company has never confirmed that Zen3 refresh is even happening. Meanwhile, Phoenix & Raphael would debut on a 5nm TSMC node, which is the same node that Genoa (EPYC server CPU series based on Zen4) will officially use.

Zen4 with more cores?

When it comes to core/thread configuration, not much is known at this point. However, there are rumors that Zen4 based Genoa might offer up to 96 cores (+32 over Zen3 Milan), which is either a result of an increased number of cores in each chiplet or rather that the CPU has more chiplets in general. However, should the first scenario be true, then Phoenix could offer up to 12 cores. Do note that this is just speculation based on a different Zen4 CPU information.
