ANOTHERWHERE

My Bachelor Thesis

This is my bachelor thesis, with the goal to use game technologies, such as powerful 3d game engines, to procedur- ally generate highly appealing and strongly immersive 3d environments based upon real map data. It aims to use map data provided from OpenStreetMap within Unity to create a visually pleas- ing scene. For this, the map layout should have a visible influence on the environ- ment and keep streets and other landmarks recognisable. It is not meant to be a visual representation of the map, but rather an interpretation of it. This leads to procedurally generated parallel worlds, which are anchored in reality and could be used for location-based games. This project consists of the conception of the environment, the production of the assets needed as well as the implementation into a self-written Unity prototype.

What I worked on

While working on AnotherWhere I really enjoyed the combination of technical and visual design. I spend about half of the ten weeks time on writing and optimising the generator scripts. The rest of the time I used to find a style for the environment, which worked well with the technology I developed. In addition to that I modelled and textured all the needed assets  implemented them into Unity.
