sadly walls and water have too strong color and appear unnatural.

Very pleasant with a nice contrast, could be increased though.

Way over-saturated. A nice composition but technically it needs some work.

I agree with bukkit, anyway I like this pic..a photo must not necessarily represent reality, but it must strike who looks at it..and I think that this photo succeed in this!

This could be a good picture but as it stands its colour is much too over-saturated and this necessarily flattens the image. Despite the colour, it's somewhat too 'stark'. I think the HDR has been substantially overdone here.

I took the liberty of selectively desaturating colors of the image to great effect. Nice work @xander562--Love the scene.

Looks a bit like a computer generated image in one of those First Person Shooter games...

It is a nice photo, but there is too much HDR for my taste.

I love it, although the water looks ick..

No thanks. Venice looks nothing like this :(
What is it about HDR that appeals to eveyone ? Colour saturation creates the most un-natural images I can imagine.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I agree that I made this image a bit over saturated. But to be honest, the point wasn't to create something as realistic as possible. Instead I wanted to create something unnatural, or surreal. I know I have a lot to learn so I appreciate all the feedback!

xander562, I am very curious about the original... Is it online somewhere? Thanks.

Some people use a camera to "capture" reality. Others us a camera - and post-processing - to "paint" a scene. Some viewers appreciate one style more than the other, but neither approach is necessarily the "right" way to use photography. It's the variety of interpretation that makes it interesting after all. The same issues were argued a century ago when impressionist painters began to challenge the establishment by interpreting reality in new and striking ways. Distaste for "processed" photographs is a stale holdover from that long settled debate. One may like or dislike a particular image and have their own reasons for doing so, but an image is wrong only if it fails to meet the artists expectations. To circumscribe creativity is to kill it. That's not to say there is not a place for skill and judgement in art, but the only legitimate role a viewer's taste plays in the process is to determine whether or not the artist achieves commercial success.

I think this is really beautiful. I have it on my desktop, and whenever I open up my computer, I can't help staring at it.

I normally HAAAAATE HDRs. But for whatever reason, I like this one a lot. Although I suppose I wish the blues were a touch more normal. The reds however are quite nice.

@WhiteDog
Post processing is good fun but please don't confuse the fine art of traditional painters with one click tweaks achieved with easy to use computer software.

@ Wildstyle

It was a Canon Powershot SD600 running CHDK. Edited in Photomatix.

A good work, although a little bit "too much". Could be nicer on a real wall.

If I must find a glitch, the washed out pearly sky is the part I like less. It's too "digital picture". An HDR should have addressed it, or at least a good NG filter (the last one not the easiest to use, in this frame).

Dear Xander,

beautiful pic, of the real thing.

For those who have never been, this is what Venice really looks like, all falling down and filthy water. This photograph is an excellent representation of the reality of modern day Venice.

Did you get any pic from Verona? Romeo and Juliettes baloney? or the ampitheater?

Keep up the good work.

missdee
