The City of Lights

May 20th, 2009

Actually, Paris is called "The city of lights" - however, I simply can't think of a more suitable title for this awesome city!

Great photo. Sad that a huge waste of energy can be so pretty.

Amazing picture, but is the city really that bright at night?

Oops sorry for the double post, but let me correct myself. there is plenty of detail it is just all blown out and over saturated.

Just wondering where this is shot from? I'm gonna be in NY in about a month and it would be awesome to shoot from this height

My apologies, but I'm going to be really critical here and say that the colours are quite over saturated (although I know this is your style), particularly the yellows noticeable in the top right corner. I also agree with Tdot that the PP effects, both in the centre of the image and the stars in the corners, are a bit overdone which gives the overall image an unnatural look that, although it doesn't suit my taste, some may like.

Still, it's an interesting image nonetheless, and I'd love to see the original. Keep them coming! ;)

Thanks for the critics! Maybe some of you can sympathize with this situation, so I'll tell you a little bg info about this shot. Sometimes I go through my old stuff and think, hey this shot is not that bad. That's what I thought about this one, so I fired up Photoshop and started editing. First you edit only a little, then a little more...and all of a sudden you end up having this here and you're not sure whether you love it or hate it. Well, to be honest, I wasn't sure about this one either and in the end I think you're right. It's oversaturated and looks too photoshopped. Promise, the next submissions will be more natural! ;-)

I won't be repetitive, because every comment here reflects my opinion..i think it's too much saturated, but I love the sky and cityscape are always fascinating for me..I love your works so keep them coming!

The bright eye popping colors is what he wanted in this photo. It looks really cool. There are plenty of other plain aerial city shots on IFL. This one is a bit more unique. Nice work!

Colours of this city are GREY! Woody Allen said this. However, this is a beautiful photo of yours.

This photo just makes me think how irresponsible humans are as caretakers of our planet. It's not beautiful in my eyes.

I fail to see how someone could think humans are irresponsible by seeing this picture. All I see is a few lights, and these lights enable humans to work and do great stuff even during the night. You wanna see wasted energy ? Take a look at religion.

I love the sky, agree with all the opinions above. Also couldn't agree more with Canada's statement.

@animeinme, there are no degrees of uniqueness. Something is unique or it's not. Given that this is similar to his previous submissions (Colors of New York, Rockefeller's View), it's safe to say it's not unique.

I have to say I enjoy your work Macindows but this piece wasn't one of your best. I love everything about this piece, the site, where you decided to shoot it from, and the way you decided to represent NYC, but the colors are a little too much. I can't argue because I can't do better, but I still believe you're one of the best.

Macindows your critique of your own work is a fascinating perspective. I love the not knowing whether to love or hate it. Thank you for posting that, it makes me look at the photo in a new light (excuse the pun).... Honestly it makes it look like a sci-fi city to me, with an advanced area booming in the middle of a 21st century city.

I really like the stars in the top corners!

Are they really stars in the corners, or the flight paths for JFK, Newark and LaGuardia?

BTW, I have your Rock picture as my wallpaper and I found it interesting that there weren't any planes in that shot. Did you take them out, or just get lucky? Keep them coming, I like your work.

thanks,

To whomever asked... it was taken from the Empire State Building.

Know what? I understand criticism but at the end of the day art is art, and is always subject to various opinions, favorable or not. And in my opinion, i like this one a lot, i don't think you over or under did anything, you do what you feel. Its certainly on my desktop. Thanks!

I really don't mind the over saturated colors - the center is slightly blown out, but it gives the image some character.

The only thing I'm really not a fan of on this image is the horizon is off by about .8 degrees. Doesn't sound like much, but on really long landscapes like this, it makes a lot of difference. Otherwise, I like the shot quite a bit :)
