Roe v. Wade: Apple, Netflix, Starbucks and more are helping their employees with travel expenses to get abortions if needed

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade, a nearly 50-year-old landmark ruling that protected the federal and constitutional right to an abortion, millions of women across the country are now living in a state of limited access or no access to abortion at all.

This monumental ruling is “expected to transform the landscape of reproductive health in America,” CNN said. Now, abortion policy will be up to individual states, allowing for many to pass new abortion restrictions.

Due to this, many who seek abortions may have to travel across state lines. But with travel expenses or accessibility not being an option for some, major companies based across the country are contributing to taking action.

Here is a list of companies who will cover travel costs for their employees who need an abortion.

Amazon

Amazon.com Inc., the second-largest U.S. private employer, told its staff on Monday it will pay up to $4,000 in travel expenses annually for non-life threatening medical treatments including abortions, according to NBC.

The reimbursements are also not specific to abortion. They provide for other non-life threatening treatments such as around cardiology, cellular gene therapies and substance-abuse disorder services as well. Amazon offers up to $10,000 in annual travel reimbursements for life-threatening issues.

Uber

The transportation company offers insurance coverage for “a range of reproductive health benefits, including pregnancy termination” and its commitment to covering travel expenses for employees accessing health care services, the New York Times reported. The company said they will also continue to stand behind their drivers, reimbursing legal expenses if any driver is sued under state law for providing transportation on our platform to a clinic.

Apple

The company’s existing benefits package allows employees to travel out of state for medical care if it is unavailable in their home state, according to an Apple spokesperson, CNN reported.

DICK’S Sporting Goods

The company released on Twitter their plan to help their employees should they need reproductive care. Friday, the company announced that if the state you live in has restricted access to abortion, they will provide up to $4,000 in travel expense reimbursement to travel to the nearest location where the care is legally available.

This benefit is available to any teammate, spouse or dependent enrolled in their medical plan, along with one support person.

Microsoft

Microsoft said in a statement to Business Insider that it will “support employees and their enrolled dependents in accessing critical health care — which already includes services like abortion and gender-affirming care — regardless of where they live across the US.”

“This support is being extended to include travel expense assistance for these and other medical services where access to care is limited in availability in an employee’s home geographic region,” Microsoft’s statement said.

Netflix

The streaming service offers travel reimbursement coverage for U.S. full-time employees and their dependents who need to travel for health care treatments including abortions and gender-affirming care, a Netflix spokesperson told CNN. Netflix also provides a lifetime allowance of $10,000 per employees or their dependents per service.

Nike

One of the largest retailers in the U.S., said it would cover travel and lodging expenses when services aren’t available to their employees, Foot Wear News reported.

“Nike offers comprehensive family planning benefits,” a company statement read. “No matter where our teammates are on their family planning journey — from contraception and abortion coverage, to pregnancy and family-building support through fertility, surrogacy and adoption benefits — we are here to support their decisions. We cover travel and lodging expenses in situations where services are not available close to home and regularly make adjustments to our benefits to ensure employees have access to the quality healthcare they need.”

Starbucks

The coffee company is providing employees enrolled in its health care plan a medical travel benefit to access an abortion, according to a note to employees by Sara Kelly, Starbucks acting executive vice president of partner resources.

“We all need to process this in our own way, and as you do, here is what I want you to know: no matter where you live, or what you believe, we will always ensure you have access to quality health care. And when legislative actions impact your access to healthcare, we will work on ways to make you feel supported.” Kelly said in the statement.

Warner Bros.

Warner Brothers also will cover travel expenses for abortions.

“In light of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, we immediately expanded our health care benefits options to cover transportation expenses for employees and their covered family members who need to travel to access abortion and reproductive care,” said a company spokesperson, according to the New York Times.

Yelp

Earlier this year, the company introduced a new insurance benefit to cover out-of-state travel for reproductive care.

“This ruling puts women’s health in jeopardy, denies them their human rights, and threatens to dismantle the progress we’ve made toward gender equality in the workplaces since Roe,” said Jeremy Stoppelman, co-founder of Yelp, according to CNN. “Business leaders must step up to support the health and safety of their employees by speaking out against the wave of abortion bans that will be triggered as a result of this decision, and call on Congress to codify Roe into law.”
